KLAMATH FALLS. FRIDAY EVENING, JUNE 12. 1008
A CHANCE FOR HARMONY
James A. Garfield, secretary of the Interior, sailed
y from San Francisco on Monday for the Hawaiian Islands.
On his return he will visit the Umatilla Irrigation project
in Oregon, which he states is progressing satisfactorily
and will be rushed to completion as soon as possible.
While in Oregon, an effort should be made to get the
Secretary to visit the Klamath project and make a
thorough investigation of conditions hero. This would
give the Directors of the Water Users' Association an op
portunity to straighten out matters connected with the
work here, which have been causing dissatisfaction among
some of the members. We believe this misunderstand-1
ing is the result of a lack of knowledge on the part of the J,r-:1,0,,r,a "'" lv"",lf' ",0 ,,B,,r
farmers as to what is uvmg done, and tne sooner tno1 rhnttuuy w. but .wry few gin are
matter is straightened outr the better it will be for the1 JU ,!. Zr ,';" "'
success of the project.
If the proper authorities could induce Mr. Garfield to
come here these problems could be laid before him and I
some solution arrived at. In order to insure success it
is imperitively necessary that the land owners and the I
Reclamation Service work in harmony. We believe
Project Engineer Murphy will unite Avith the Water
Users in persuading the Secretary to come here, as every
delay will tend to widen the breech caused by the lack of
knowledge on the part of the land owners. Mr. Gar
field is the man to bring peace to the jwople of this sec
tion and every pressure should be brought to bear to get
him to visit here on this trip.
which is now being reclaimed and irrigated by the great,
est irrigation project over undertaken by the United
States government. Hesides this agricultural land there
nro thousands of acres of fine grazing land for summer
feeding of stock.
For the investor and man of capital, wo have one of
tlio HpliPst. fmmtrins in tho west lo bo developed: millions!
of feet of superior pine timber to be manufactured and,
marketed, and unlimited material for the manufacture of1
lime, brick and cement.
For the homebuildors wo can oll'er a land of superior
schools, well established churches, no saloons and an ideal
climate. These advantages and conditions are bringing
hundreds of people into the county every week, and ini
the face of the reported stagnation of business elsewhere,
Klamath County is forging ahead with wonderful
rapidity.

OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL
There is probably no country in the whole United
States that offers more inducements to every class of men
than Klamath County.
To the tourists we can offer the magnificient scenery
of Crater Lake and Anna Creek Canyon, in reaching
which one travels through green forests and beautiful
valleys containing lakes and streams of crystal water, and
surrounded by towering mountains. To the south of
us lies the Lava Beds where the great Modoc war was
fought and every section of. which has some point of
interest.
For the sportsman, there are the already-famous fish-
. ing resorts of Spring Creek, Williamson river and Pelican
Bay, while the lakes and marshes of the country are the
feeding grounds of millions of ducks and wild geese.
The forests abound with deer and other wild game that
would satisfy every desire of the sportsman.
For the farmer and rancher there are hundreds of
thousands of acres of best agricultural land in the west,
