Two weeks or so ago the New York
Tribune published an Interview
with Mr. .lames B. Montgomery, of
Portland, which the editor intro
duced witli"the following biograph
ical sketch: "His hobby Just at
plcscnt is tlie building of steamships
to take lumber from his timltcr laud
iu Oregon to Kan Francisco, where
he Is able to dispose of It lit a profit
of ) a thousand." In the same
Journal we noticed a strenuous pro
test agahiHt the Mills' tariff hill from
owners on the Paclllc coast of "ves
sels engaged in carrying lumber
from the northern ports to ports In
the stale of California," who de
clared that if tlie duly on lumber
should be taken oil; the manu
facturers of lumber would siillir
severely, and the Injury to the ves
sel owners would be fatal. Iu an
other column of the Tribune of the
saiueilay waspubllshed the following
dispatch from Its own corresoiident
In San KrancNce:
"The Pllie l.unilicr Peel has suc

men are only f'i more per mouth,
and the running cx)ciikch of the
vessels are no greater. The Peel,
which lias adopted all the methods
of newly-Invented Trusts, lias
