LANDS A.Ml HOJIES.
Ararioit county Is sltuatel in the
leart of the magnificent Willamette
vulley, the central gem in the clus
ter of rich counties that form that
princely domain, and is the banner
commonwealth of the great north
west In all the essentials that go to
ward making it a profitable abiding
place, and a home for the thrifty
'.inner, the cunning artisan and the
ndustrlous mechanic.
llich in its agricultural resources
iu its cultivated and uncultivated
lands, In its water powers, and
minerals; rich in its colleges and
-bools of learning, and witli a
.limate unsurpassed for its salubrity,
it TirttwntH to the immigrant from
f the overcrowded states, where cold
winters and not summers, witli
terrible cyclones, prevail, who
comes to the coast witli sonic
means, advantages tlmt no other
o'lnty in Oregon possesses.
Much has uecii written of this
ui-stirn country that renuires a
itretch of the imagination to com
prehend, and numerous complaints
ro heard from tho class who have
hcen misled by them, so iu tills
liricf sketch the writer desires to
ivold exagoration as to its present
and prosjH-e'.ivc advantages, asking
thoie in the east into whose hands
tills may fall particularly thot-e
who have their eyes dircctctftowanis
this coast to iieruso it carefully,
feeling that it Is not written to lure
immigrants within its borders, but
only as a truthful dlscrlption of a
land which, if it does not "flow
milk and honey," contains within
Its bosom wealth and resources equal
to any other country on the Pacific
side of the ltocky mountains.
JIOUNDAIUES.
Marlon county Is bounded on the
north by the Willamette river and
Hutte creek which separates It from
Clackamas county; on tho cast by
Cliiclcniiiiis count v and tho Cascade
mountains, which separate it from
Wasco county; on tho south by the
Hantiani river and tho north fork of
the rNintiani, separating it from
I. inn eounty.nnd on tho west by the
Willamette river.
1'llYSICAI. FOKMATION.
The county contains, Including
valley, prairie and mountain lands,
about 0 K.0(H) acres.
'I here are two main divisions, tin
mountain and tho valley. Tin
latter extends from tho "Willanietti
river to tho foot of tho CnsciuU
luiuintalus, a distance of about lli
tet a miles.
Tho mountainous portion contains
some fourteen townships of niosti
uuHiimyjcil land; lying in n strip
twelve miles north and south h
forty miles cast and west, and com
prises all classes of land, from ilch
narrow valleys in tho pastes, up
through all tho grades of rolling,
hilly and broken, to that of rock

craggy peaks. 1 1 Is generally heavily

A decided advantage Marion coun

climate during tho winter niontlu
tho uplands aro seldom too wet V

fanners are through with their scim'.
Ing, the hill fanner is prewiring rot

low lands aro much preferred b
many; the yield per acre Is generall
greater, tiiui lierhans low laUtr is re
ipilivnl to place the Mill Iu proper

the season prove dry, the bottom
lands ari sure to bring tho beai
crops. No better funning land ouit
