X-RAYS AND SMILES Tha presence of a small quantity of gus in tho alimontary canal may bo described as constituting the or dinary condition, as " certain foods, such as pens, beans, etc., naturally ellminlate and create gas while un dergoing digestion. It is only when this, gas accumu lates to such extent as to cause lu convenienco, and" belching, that :n person may bo said to be suffering from flatulonce. The collection of gas becomes in extreme cases so great that a swelling presents itself in tho pit of the stomach; and when this stage is reached, complaint is made that this part feels tender to tho touch, tho clothes of the person being loosened to obviate the dis tress occasioned by pressure. Attempts are usually made to get rid of this stomach-gas by eructa tion, and immediato relief is some times obtained when this is accom plished. Infants are very subject to flatulence, especially when their natural food is taken away too has tily, and when food other than that provided for them by nature Is given them. Mothers and nurses are fa miliar with this Infantile trouble, nnd have various remedies for it, the most popular of which Is char coal, which relieves the trouble com pletely, by absorbing tho stomachic and Intestinal gasses, thereby remov Ing the colicky pains of the infant, which is tho symptoms which most frequently causes the nightly crying spells. Charcoal is a mnrvfelous absorb ent, and is capable of oxidizing and absorbing one hundred times its own volumo in gasses. It is applicable to nil cases of flatulence or gas in tho stomach, and as it is entirely narmioss, it can do taken by any one, with comparative Impunity and without fenr of its doing any harm whatever to tho system. Infants and older people can use It as readily as young persons ami thoso in the prime of life, and noth ing but behellt can result from its use. It can also be us,ed In any quan tity, and in this rospoct it differs from drugs sometimes employed for stomach troublos. as tho dosage of theeo must bo rogulatod by a compe tent physician. Not so with char coal, liowwor, as is shown by the fact that n Pronch surgeon used as much as fifteen ounces per day, every day of tho last thirty years of his llfo. Stuart's charcoal lozenges should bo omployed in all cases whore the stomach Is filled with gases result ing from tho fermentation and de composition of food, nnd also from tho use of those vegetable foods i which soom naturally to onKendt-ri and promote tho accumulation of gas Those wonderful little lozenges t . i t . i. . wmca uavo an onormous ana evei iuoi'wsiug sale nro mado from best willow charcoal, combined with pun honoy, and furnish to the sufferer from stomach-gHBet) and foul breath the very host and most palatable and delightful form In which chav. coal can be administered to the atom ach. i Stuart's Charcoal Losenges arc exceedingly agreeable to the tasie In striking contrast and contra-dis-tlnotion to the ordinary powdered charcoal, which Is a most unpleas ant done to Uke.
