DAILY 'CAPITAL JOURNAXj, SALEM, OREGON, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEjdlKR 11, 1010. PAGET SETTER" U6ENE man WAS THE FIRST W. W. KRANSTETTER THE FIRST NAME TO GO ON THE REGISTER OK THE NEW HOTEL MARION, WITH THE CELEBRATED JOHN DOE A CLOSE SECOND. To W. W. Dranstetter, of Eugene, belongs the honor and distinction of having been the first person to place his name on the register of the new Hotel Marion, of this city. Those sharing .this honor with him upon the night of Monday, September 12, when the first lodgers were received into the new hostelry, which has not yet thrown open its doors only for the accommodation of fair visitors and to relieve the congested condition of the lodging house service, were the "ubiquitous John Doo," also of Eugene, and Louis P. Block,' of New York City. The new Hotel Marion will not be open'-for the reception of guests for some time yet, but a number of the rooms have been llnished and fur nished ready for occupancy, and Man ager H. W. Doolittle, happening to stroll down the street on Monday ev ening, and finding some fair visitors roaming the streets searching in vain for lodging, took compassion upon them and put them to bed in some of the new rooms. When the news of this gained circulation there came a great demand for accommoda tions the following day, with the re sult that the hotel is doing a flourish ing business in the lodging house line. Last night Manager Doolittle and Chief Clerk Charles Savage supplied comfortable quarters for the night to nearly 100 guests, and, as soon as other rooms are connected up with lights, they will be thrown open tem porarily for tho accommodation of state fair visitors. With such enterprise, far-sighted and experienced men as Manager Doo little and Chief Clerk Savage, present proprietor and manager of the Cot tage Hotel, in charge, the future prosperity and success of Salem's now hostelry, which will rank up among the best in tho country in modern equipment and service, seems assured. Manager Doolittle also gained an undying reputation for lionesty, at least in the mind of tho ilrst guest lie extended tho courte sies of the new hotel to, for the safe delivery of Mr. Branstotter's gold -watch to its rightful owner, wh'ch tho latter had left under his pillow upon quitting his bed Tuesday morn ing. o AN ARTISTIC JOll OP PLASTERING The plastering of the Hotel Marion 3s completed, and it is a piece of work of which Wm. Ratzeburg may justly feel proud. It is the next biggest job of plastering over done in the city, hut it isv not the next best, for the simple reason that it is the best. The -work goes to show that Salem's plas terer, Ratzeburg, is "on to his Job," as it is expressed in the vernacular of the news boys, and the work should bo seen to bo adequately appreciated. There is no Job too big for Billy, and none requiring genuine, artistic skill that he is afraid to tackle. Whoever had the letting of the plastering con tract is to be commended for giving it to a local man.-and their Judgment in selecting the man puts them up in tho rank of Solomon. . o JIARY MANNERING HAS APPENDICITIS New York, Sept. 14. Miss Mary Mannerlng, actress, Is reported rest ing easily today at tho Roosevelt hospital following an operation last night for appendicitis. Unless com plications set in, she will recover. Miss Mannerlng was attacked -while at rehearsal Monday. She was taken to the hospital yesterday, -where it was decided an operation was necessary.
