ARE YOU GIVING?
We hear a great deal on this subject these days. .lust now the whole country is interested in the fourth Liberty Loan Botul Campaign. "We hear some people who are buying bonds talking about giving in this way to help the government. But is this giving? A govern ment bond is the safest investment that can ho and four and a half per cent interest it as much as any one can expect on . ??stmcnt, where no work is added to in crease the returns. Buying bonds cannot he considered giving. There are some who speak of giving to the Y. M. C. A., the Y. \V. C. A., the War Work of the Church, the Red Cross and other agencies working for the welfare of the sol diers. These agencies all have as one of theii aims to make our soldiers and sailors more efficient. Our desire is that our forces shall overcome our enemies, and that they shall do it as quickly and as completely as possible. We desire this because we want our country to remain free and we want the world to be a place fit to live in. Whatever we contribute for the betterment of our soldiers and sailors, therefore, is an investment from which we are to receive large returns. Can we properly call this giving/ Many speak and speak proudly of giving for the support of the Church. He who eon tributes to the support of the Church to which he belongs receives many and great direct re turns. In the church building he has a place of comfort in which to worship God. In the preaching of the gospel and in the other parts of the service his soul is fed and his spiritual life is strengthened. In the same way each member of his family receives similar blessings. In the Sunday-school his children are taught and trained so that they will be of more com tort and pleasure to him than they would be otherwise. The church is an important asset to the community in which he lives. It makes the people about him better citizens and pleasantcr neighbors than they would be otherwise. No self-respecting man would be willing to live in a community where the influence of a church was not felt. The church is an asset to a community from a financial standpoint. It secures a better ob servance of law. This means a diminished cost for courts and police protection. It in sures a more faithful administration of civic affairs. This means a lower tax rate than there would be without the church. Some years ago Dr. Moses I). Iloge, of Rich mond, preached on Sunday night for several years in what was known as the Old Market Hall, a building belonging to the city, and situated in the most lawless section of the city. It was found to be in need of repairs that would cost a thousand dollars. The city offi cials raised the question as to whether it would be advisable to spend that amount on the hall, as it was then used otdy for preaching. Among others they consulted the chief of police. He said that the preaching there was worth more in the way of policing that dis trict than any other force that could be se cured for a much larger sum. The church reduces fire insurance. Every man pays a lower fire insurance because of the presence of a church in the community in which his property is situated. Take out of any city the influence of its churches and see at what rate you could insure your prop erty. There are many other ways in which a con tributor to the support of a' church derives direct benefit. It would seem, therefore, that when he makes his contributions he is really buying that which will add to bis own personal comfort and emolument, as well as that of the other members of his family. When a man contributes for mission work in his own community or in any part of the country, there conic to him similar returns, he cause the people of the community or of the country are made better, and then they be come more law-abiding and prosperous. This makes the country a better place to live in and improves its business. What helps one man or one community helps all. In a larger and broader sense the same is true of gifts to Foreign Missions and many of the other causes of benevolence. The bet ter we can make the world, the better oil' we will be. When we speak of giving, let us look and see whether it is not really an investment that we arc making which will bring us large re turns. We feel safe in making some invest ments, because we have confidence in those who manage the business in which we in vest, and are sure that we will receive just returns. This is the reason why we feel safe in investing in government bonds. When we invest in the Lord's work we ought to feel safe, for he will see to it that we re ceive just returns, and they will not be limit ed to four and a half per cent. Is it not then the part of wisdom to make as large investment as possible in the King's business? Does some one say that this is a very low plane upon which we have placed giving? Well, look at it. carefully on this ground, and it may be you will be in a better position to mount to higher ground. A NEW WORLD AND A NEW MAN. What kind of world will we be in when this world strife is ended, as it will be in the right way? That the world will be immensely changed is admitted by all thoughtful people, it can never be the same. The ideals of most of the nations have been intensely selfish ones. To extend their power and acquire more of the material gifts of earth seems to have been the purpose of all of them. The physical and com mercial and intellectual conquest of the back ward peoples and undeveloped weaklings in .he world family seemed to have been the main purpose of the great dominant nations of the world. The weaker nations had only the dread ambition of not being swallowed up by the more progressive ones. That will no longer be the dominant aim of the world. "To live and to let live will be burned into the hearts of men. There will more nations emerge from this contest, than went into it. The anaconda designs of the Central Powers of swallowing a great number of smaller nations to make one Mittel-Europa will vanish. Peoples, that have long been de nied national existence, will become powers again ? with more or less freedom. It would be in vain that this war has been fought to a finish unless the Poles, the Czechs and the Southern Slavs are given national existence and protected in their rights as na tions. Even the Jews, after twenty centuries of subjection, are likely to be erected into the republic of Palestine. The world will get a new idea in the right of smaller nations to live unhindered and un oppressed by greater nations. And the coming history of the world will not be the story of a nation growing strong and overrunning the world and then becoming effete by luxury and succumbing to another robust people. "The Decline and Fall of Nations" will no longer be the melancholy theme of future historians. What a tremendous purpose that will be. llow gloriously can America help her backward South American sister republics. Is not this purpose very close the Christlike purpose, 44 Ye that are strong bear the infirmities ot the weak and so fulfil the law of Christ.'' A League of Nations for the purpose of up lifting this world into the light of honorable and decent living will come close to fulfilling the purpose of our Lord, who came not to con demn the world but to save it. We are sure that America with her high ideals of righteous ness between nations can lead the van in this glorious development. There will be a new ear^h. What is the duty of every man in it now? To win this war > not for glory, nor for gain, but that the nations may have an opportunity to fulfil this purpose. These criminals that have disturbed the peace of the world to gorge themselves with spoil, must be taught the severe lesson right now, that sin is a disgrace to any people. The mili tary power of any nation must be subordinated to the advancement of all other nations. Not until Germany has seen a great light, and has had whipped into her tough soul, that force, brutality and crime are not the methods of national uplift, can we clear the way for a new world life. This, then, is the duty of the Entente Nations. Our individual duty is to steel ourselves against any false peace. To harden our hearts against any move that will leave the world as it was five years ago. As individuals we must subordinate self to the good of the world, and in our private deal ing show the same altruistic spirit that we must have in the area of the world. Selfish ness must go ? out' of our lives, and out of our nation. . / y Selfishness is sin. Sin goes when we invite in the sin -destroyer, Jesus Christ. Is he reigning in your heart* A. A. L. Contributed CHURCH VERSUS KINGDOM. By a Contributor. In the Presbyterian of the South of July 24th appears an article by S. E. Tabb on 4 4 The Church Not a Kingdom." In the issue of August 14th is an article by a brother from Missouri, who declines to be shown, entitled ''The Visible Church a Kingdom," and in September 4th a brother from Louisiana an- , swers affirmatively his title question, 4 4 Is the Church Not a Kingdom?" The first was long on Scripture, 4 4 with many quotations from the Bible." The others seemed rather short on Scripture but long on the Westminster Confession of Faith, which says: 4 'The Supreme Judge, by whom all controversies of religion are to be determined, and all decreees of councils, opinions ox an cient writers, doctrines of men and private spirits, are to be examined, and in whose sen tence we are to rest, can be no other but the Holy Spirit speaking in the Scripture."
