effort to do the very best work that
it is possible for us to do.
What l)o Working Men Think of
the Church? It is very unfortunate
that the classification has been made
between men who work with their
hands and those who work with their
heads. Most of the writing and talk
ing on general subjects is done by
those who are mind workers, anc\
they feel that they belong to a dis
tinct class from those who work with
their hands. The fact is that both
of these classes are composed of men
who are very much alike in all of the
essentials that go to make up the
man. They think and act very much
alike. There are some men among
the mental workers who have a very
poor opinion of the Church. There
are tsome men among what we call
the laboring class who have the same
kind of opinion. On the other hand,
there are men of both classes who
are earnestly and sincerely devoted to
the Church. We can find in any city
churches made up practically entirely
of what we call the working class of
people, and we will find in these
churches as devoted, earnest Chris
tian people as can be found anywhere.
They are loyal to the Church and
loyal to their Master.
How Is the Church Kcaching the
Working Classes? The Church is
reaching the working classes by car
rying them the gospel. This is done
by preaching in the pulpit, by work
in the Sunday school, by all the va
rious kinds of work which pastor and
people do in winning fouls for Christ

to Working Men? We can commend
the Church to working men by being
very careful to avoid using the term
"working men" as though those who
worked with their hands were of a
different class from others and ware
not worthy of quite as much consid
eration as other classes, it can be
done by dealing with them just as we
deal with other classes of people, by
giving them the gospel in any way
that we can present it to others, Dy
recognizing those who have accepted
it as our brethren in Christ and by
showing them that they have a part
in the great work which God has com
missioned His Church to do iu '.he
world and by giving them an oppor
tunity to do this work.

recently of the problem I was facing
in regard to a call to the presidency
of Peking University. For over two
months I have been trying to weigh
the relative claims of my present po
sition and this new field of service,
with the determination to decide pure
ly on the basis of where I could count
most for the Christian movement, in
China, and in the faith that when
one sincerely sought to know God's
will, this will would sooner or lat?r
be made unmistakably clear. But it
has been very perplexing. My life in
Nanking has been so very happy; I
have spent so much time and effort
in trying to equip myself for theo
logical teaching as my special contri
bution to the whole cause; I have
become so closely involved in a va
riety of local activities and some of
the general movements, all of which
head up in Shanghai (much nearer
to Nanking of course than to Peking);
my departure at a time when our
President was in America owing to
sickness in his family and Dr. Price
was about to start on furlough, added
to the inherent difllculMe? of supply
ing vacancies for this type of work
(technical and Chinese literary quali
fications, a theological attitude that
would carry confidence, ability to sym
pathize with and win the respect of
