f God's children? God forbid! We mean rath er to enlarge and not to diminish. To make Monday as holy as Sunday (to the child of God), to put all of our means (money in cluded) at our gracious Father's disposal. We believe Paul lived and taught this under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Let us, by tlis Spirit 's help, live on the high plane of his rich grace and leave the lowlands of legalism far below us. Charlottesville, Va. MODERN ISMS IN THE LIMELIGHT. \ * '* By Rev. Dr. E. W. MeCorkle, D. D. A new book with immediate value is I)r. T. C. Johnson's Modern Isms. In this up-to-date work a splendid service has been done the Church by throwing the searchlight of truth on Mormonism, Eddyism, Russellism and Nietzschzism. Mormonism, the cancer in the western shoulder of our republic, is shown to be a real menace with its polygamy, its po litical power, its travisty on theology, as well as its propaganda with its tentacles in our own mountains. Eddyism is also exposed as neither science nor religion. And yet it is the most virile of all our western fads. This is due, as the au thor suggests, to the strong influence of the mind over the body, which accounts for the so-called V divine" healing. Added to that is Oriental Pantheism, with Gnosticism and Ra tionalism. Then, as Mr. Barnum said, we are ready to be duped. New thoughtism is treat ed as the bastard child of Mother Eddy ? though Pastor Russell and Mrs. Eddy have been proven to be impostors, thousands have been deluded by their plausible writings. Tlu vaporings of both Eddyism and Russellism are set forth in Box Car Capitals, by Dr. Johnson. Russell's shrewd system of advertising, with the fascination that books dealing with the future have for us, accounts in large incisure for his success; though "it contradicts almost every fundamental doctrine of the Christian faith." Nietzscheism with the super man and the will to power as well as that might is right is a "pagan reaction against Christianity " The discussion of this amoral thing that has helped to play such havoc recently is peculiar ly timely. This is a small book, but big in thought, and is a most appropriate contribu tion to the literature of our time. If you wish to know these things, get the book. Rockbridge Baths, Va. ORGANIC UNION. By Mr. Samuel B. Woods. The chief objection to organic union to a layman is the unfaithfulness of the Northern Presbyterian Church to the Westminster Stand ards. While a great majority of the Northern Church is true to Presbyterianism, a large part of that Church is not; and unfortunately, ths majority permits and condones this crime against the faith of our fathers. Theological students who state that they do not believe in the divinity of Christ, who re ject the miracles and pronounce parts of th3 Bible "myths," are nevertheless licensed a* Presbyterian ministers to preach this gospel in Presbyterian pulpits. These worship intel lect, not God; these reject the Bible, bccausc their reason does not approve. The faith of a little child does not appeal to them. They pat puny intellect, man's finite and fallible judg ment, against God's Holy Word, against God's Holy Spirit. It is the arrogant assumption of intellectual pride, the haughty spirit of van ity and self-importance which control tfiese apt pupils of teachers of the "higher criti cism" ? that is, the destructive criticism. It is bad enough to have men called Presbyterians preach such doctrines in Presbyterian pulpits, but it is far worse that theological seminaries teaching such false doctrines should be toler ated by the Northern Church within its bounds and that neither teachers nor pupils should be brought before the courts oT the Northern Church and condemned. The Westminster Standards are the glory of the Presbyterian Church and have made it what it is. It is due to their strict interpretation of the Bible as the inspired word of God that clear knowledge, strong faith, backbone and nerve have characterized Presbyteiians. Men have the right to reject these standards, the constitution of the Presbyterian Church, but they have no right to do so and still call them selves Presbyterians. A proper sense of honor should lead a theological professor cr licen tiate, when he has reached the point of reject ing the Confession of Faith, which he has taken a solemn vow to maintain and uphold, and of ripping up the Bible and casting away those parts that did not plei\se him, to withdraw and unite with some other body whose articles of faith he would not violate. But the Northern Church is rich in loaves and ffches and such offenders generally prefer to remain, though they are traitors in the camp. AiuJ the majoi ity of the Northern Church, though true to the standards in faith, by permitting this con dition to exist and grow, fail in a solemn duty. The right hand offends, but they have not the nerve to cut it off. A Northern Presbyterian minister prcached for us some time since, dep-irting astonishing ly from the doctrines of the Bible and the Con fession of Faith. Meeting him a few days later, lie ?y pleasantly agreed to explain to me various of his views. I asked him if he regarded the Bible as the inspired word o! God. He 'answered, "Yets, but probably not as you do," and then proecede! to show that there was 110 more inspiration ir. the Bible than in a pagan idolater who felt an impulse to do a kind deed. I asked it he believed in the Virgin birth of our Saviour. He said that he did not. I asked about Christ's vicarious atonement. This he did away with entirely, and in the course of his talk the miracles went by the board, and parts or the Old and New Testaments. I11 fact, there was little left of the Bible and nothing whfitevev of the Old Faith which plants our feet on the solid rock, Christ Jesus, takes away the fear of death, comforts us with the blessed hope of the resur rection and gives to this poor life the peace that passeth understanding And this Presby terian minister was not from New York, but a graduate of a northern seminary always re garded by us of the South as "true blue." The degeneracy and degradation of Germany are due directly to her "higher criticism," falsely so called. This intellectual madness was cradled in that land and went forth from its universities and theological seminaries. As this destructive criticism ate into the heart of the people they sank lower and lower until at last the world was shocked by the perfidy, the lust and the brutality of a nation which had pro duced Martin Luther and had once believed and loved the Bible as the inspired word of God. Undermine the faith of any people, de stroy their belief in God and the Bible, and they revert to the savage state. If there is 110 God and the Bible is a book of fables; if there is no heaven and 110 hell, 110 hereafter and this life ends it all, naturally ? "He shall take who has the power, ITe shall keep who can." "Higher criticism," a wolf in sheep's cloth ing is in our midst today. Shall the Southern Church make itself responsible for it by or ganic union with a Church which permits it to be preached in her pulpits? "Higher" criti cism threatens Christianity and the high ideals of our national life. There was never a time when the clear principles and the hard doc trines of the Presbyterian Church were move needed in the world than today. Our Scotch ancestors died for them. Shall we not stand like a stone wall in their defense? Charlottesville, Va. THE TITHE OBLIGATORY. By the Chairman of u Presbyterial Committee on Reneficence. Can this thesis be maintained when so many earnest and godly and learned men teach just the opposite? Let it be supposed that a member went to his minister to inquire concerning this sub ject, and th.it the following conversation took place : Member: I have just been reading in my Church paper that the tithe is not obligatory. In this Progressive Campaign movement and its accompanying Stewardship Campaign "a tithe propaganda" is being waged which is thought to be not "fair," and one has cj'lled . "the teaching of the tithe 4 Judaizing,' and a 'legalism' similar to that rebuked by Paul in Galatians." So in this Habel-confusion of views and voices I use my pastoral privilege of coming to you for help. Minister: I shall be glad to give you such help as I may be able. What is the precise point you wish considered? Member: First of all, I would like to be more assured than I am that paying the tithe is not now obligatory. If it is nor, that lets me out, for why should I tumble over myself to pay what I am not legally, morally or so cially boiaid to pay? I have net noticed that people pay a tenth who do not believe in pay ing it. Minister: I have given this matter very careful study, not only for my own edification and control, but also because of my official position on the Beneficence Committee of Pres bytery. Please note the following points: 1. The Lord is Supreme Proprietor: as it Is written, Ps. 24:1, "The earth is the Lord's and the fulness thereof." The silver and gold (Hag. 2:8), all fowls, cattle, wild beasts are his (Ps. 50:10, 11). 2. Man is the Lord's tenant. An insepara ble idea of tenancy is accountancy. So the Proprietor says to his tenant, "Honor the Lord with thy substance" (Prov. 3:9). "Occupy," i. c., do business herewith, "till I come"; an 1 then the accounting. The parables of the tal ents (Matt. 25:14-30) and of the pounds (Luke 19:12-27), show up stewardship. Member: Yes, and I remember that the steward that didn't whack up all right fared just awfully. Hut, to get down to brass tack.?, how much? Minister: I am coming to that. In Lev. 27:30 it is solemnly stated that "the tithe (or tenth) ... is the Lord's: it is holy unto the Lord." Note the present tense, Is, not shall be, future. This is the statement of a princi ple or fact. Now, a fact or principle exist.! independently of any statement of it. When Cod said, "The tithe is the Lord's," it surely must signify that that which is spoken of was already an established fact. Member: How are you going to confirm that ? Minister: This way: In Gen. 28:22 we see
