She was a daughter of James Craig Riddle and Josephine Mcllwaine Riddle Whilu she never ceased to claim Petersburg as her home, and spent her vacations there, yet as a teacher in the Mary Baldwin Seminary, the greater part of her life was spent in Staunton, Va. Miss Riddle was of a family that has produced a number of superior teachers who have left their mark on education In Virginia. She herself had a genius for teaching. After her graduation at the Southern Female College in Petersburg, Va., at the early age of eighteen years, she began to teach a private school in her home town. In a short while she became a teacher in her alma mater, and after a teaching experience of five years there, she was called t ? the faculty of the Mary Baldwin Seminary in Staunton. With the exception of one year, in which she stopped for a rest, the remainder of her life, thirty-three years, was devoted to teaching in that school. Until near the close of this period, when her health began .to be seriously impaired, she never missed a class on account of sickness or for any other personal reason. Though she had mastered the sub ject she taught, yet every day wit nessed a fresh and conscientious preparation of herself for the present task. She inspired enthusiasm in her pupils and painstakingly trained them to habits of endurance, perse verance, breadth and thoroughness in study. With a face of rare beauty, unfailingly gentle and refined In speech and manner, courteous toward all, without ever a suggestion of un candor or of disloyalty to what she believed to be right, she kept before her students the highest ideals of fidelity, of honor and true womanli ness. While she taught these ideals by precept, much more did she live them in her own loftiness of aim and character. Her wise counsels also were an Invaluable aid to those re sponsible for the conduct of the school. She made a public profession of faith when she was sixteen years old. Her religion was not emotional nor ion's Joy Drink' CHRISTO MFG.CO.ITVC. "Say it With Flowers " HAMMOND "FLOWERS OF GUARANTEED FRESHNESS" Flowers by Telefiraph Anywhere Telephone Madison 630 109 E.
