Jesus sent out His twelve apostles as the first regularly appointed Chris tian missionaries. He gave them a double commission. They were to preach the gospel and work miracles of healing as a proof of their divine commissions. He tells them that they are not to provide for their own ne cessities, but to expect those to whom they preached to provide what they needed. Christ lays down a great principle, which the Apostle Paul ex presses (1 Cor. 9:14) very strikingly, "So hath the L.ord ordained that they which preach the Gospel should live of the Gospel." He brings out very clearly the thought that the preacher is to be naid for his services just as any other man is paid for his work. Too many people think of what they pay the preacher as a benevolence bestowed upon hiin, as a kind of char ity. The preacher works and should be paid. The Apostles had a very success ful missionary tour, and when they returned Jesus took them off into a quiet place in the country in order that they might rest and talk over their experiences with Him. But the people followed Him and would give Him no time to rest. Jesus never complained because of what He had to do. So He had noth ing to say in objection to the people coming to Him on thi3 occasion. The interest of the people in His teach ing was shown in their staying with Him all day without food. In His compassion for them, He told the dis ciples to feed them. They reported that all the food they could find was a small boy's lunch, nve loaves (rather biscuits) and two small fish (John G : 9 ) . With this limited sup ply He fed 5,000 men. Jesus will always take what we bring to Him and multlpiy it and use it, no matter how small it may seem to us to be. When He did finally get off in some quiet place with His disciples. He asked them as to what they had heard on their journey, showing men's opin ion of Him. When these answers were given, He then asked the dis ciples what they thought of Him. Peter at once announced his belief in His divinity and His being the promised Messiah (Christ, God's anointed one). Jesus then makes a very clear state ment in regard to His death, but the disciples could not take in His mean ing. A week after this Jesus took Peter, James and John, His inner circle of disciples, up on the Mount of Trans figuration. There we have one of the many instances of His praying. And while He prayed that wonderful transformation took place in His ap pearance. There Moses and Elijah joined Him and talked with Him "of His decease which He should accom plish at Jerusalem." Peter was so delighted with the ex perience of being in the company of these three heavenly beings, that he wanted to stay there, not considering the fact that such a course would de prive the other disciples and the rest of the people of the presence, work and teaching of Jesus. Many of us are just as selfish about our religion. We enjoy it ourselves and do not stop to think that others need it just as much as we do. Jesus showed these three, when they came down from the mountain THE SUNDAY SCHOOL Communion Ware of Quality Dcst materials.
