STORY OF THE GOOD SAMARITAN.
Luke 10:25-37. Dec. 10, 1922.
Jesus used parables a great deal In
I.Ms teaching. A parable is the ac
count of some event or condition
which has happened or which may
happen in the material world used to
convey a spiritual truth. This para
ble is used to answer the question of
the lawyer. Teaching by illustration
is a very effective manner of teaching,
if the illustrations are wisely select
ed. Both young and old will usually
remember an illustration and the
truth connected with it far better than
? hey will a bare statement of the
A lawyer in the New Testament
usage was a man learned in and .t
teacher of the Scriptures. One of
these came to Jesus and asked Him
a question, trying to get Him to say
something that he could use as a
charge against Him.
In appearance the lawyer's question
was a simple and a natural question.
f sha11 1 do to inherit eternal
1 e. This was a question much dis
cussed by the lawyers. They believed i
t at eternal life would come to them, !
because of something that they did.
With them it was salvation by works
The lawyer no doubt thought that
Jesus would answer his question from
that point of view, and no doubt he
expected to be able to show that any
answer Jesus might give was wrong
and that he would in that way at
least be able to discredit His teach
ing, or possibly more seriously entrap
Jesus was not bo easily caught He
turns the question back upon the
questioner in a most adroit manner.
He says to the lawyer what practi
cally amounts to this, "You are a stu
dent of the law of God. What does
your study show that it teaches? We
are to be governed by the law."
The lawyer showed that he knew
the law. He quoted two passages of
the law (Deut. 6:6 and Lev. 19:18),
which summed up its whole teaching
Jesus agrees with him as to this state
ment of the law.
The lawyer wanted tQ 8hQw that
he had done all that could be expect
ed of him, seems to assume that he
has fulfilled the law with reference
to God, but wanted to know about
his duty to his neighbor. It was not
a question as to what he was to do,
but to whom he must show his love.
He asked, "Who is my neighbor, whom
i am to love as myself?"
The idea that many people have
about neighbors is that they are those
who live near them. But no matter
where he lived, no Jew would have
considered a man neighbor who was
not a Jew.
Jesus answers this question by what
we call the Parable of the Good Sa
maritan. The wounded man was pre
sumably a Jew. Two of his own peo- I
P e saw him in his trouble. They
were both men who had been special
ly set apart by God for His service.
It would have been supposed Chat they
would have known that one of the
best ways to serve was to serve a
fellowman in bis need.
These both selfishly passed the
wounded man by, leaving him to die
of his wounds. There came along
that same road a Samaritan. He be
longed to a race that the Jews de
spised. Had he met the Samaritan be
fore he met the robbers, the Jew
would in all probability called him a
dog or have tried to spit on him.
The Samaritan knew the feelings of
