r 1 ST. HELENS MIST. FRIDAY. JULY 12. 1918 V1 i Y.M.C.A. ARMY COLUMN M. V. A. Kpitpm Mfti tin tlio RattlcfU-ld It was the night before they were to go over the top. Writing from Ehell-riddled hut near the front line trenches, E. A. Ballis, of Walla Wal la, a Y. M. C. A. war work secretary "over there" paints a vivid word pic ture of the s.eno. A mixed crowd of Trench and Americans nail rstnibled. Comic re (itations, 1 u prompt u songs and paro dies on popu.r.r nlir were sung In the crowded "Y" hut. Then came the parody on "There's a Long, Long Trail A-Winding," sung over and over again. It's a long, long trail a-wlndlng. Throught No Man's Land out in France, Where the shrapnel shells are burst lng But we must advance. There'll be lots of thrills and fight lng. Before our dreams all come true; But we'll show the darned old Kaiser, What we Yankee boys can do! Then "Glory, Glory, Hallelujah repeated again and again. Not word of religion hejrd, yet the hut fairly reverberating witha sub-con scious religious spirit God, home and loved ones. Then a lad from Dixie handed the Y. M. C. A. secretary his gold watch end chain and his mother's address If I don t come back tomorrow morning," said he, "you will write to my mother and send her this watch, won't you?',' Others did likewise. Then came the rrild and the bar rage. The earth tr?mbled with the terrific explosions end out Into the dark of that awful night went the Y M. C. A. men with buckets of hot chocolate to serve the men, a practi cal Christianity Buch as the world has never before witnessed. Men and Women Wanted for Y. C. A. Work Overseas M In the next Y. M. C. A. drive, the eight states of the west will raise 6 per cent, or $5,0000,000 of the $112,000,000 which is the minimum amount sat by the National War Work Council of the Y. M. C. A. as necessary to meet the needs of the American coldier and his Allies at home and abroad and also finance the Y. M. C. A. In its work of erect lng hostess houses for the use of sol diers and women war workers. Fully cs important s the financial drive io the statement that 4000 men and women are needed to carry on Y. M. C. A. work among the troops of the American, French and Italian armies overseas before , September 1st and that 5000 additional men and women will be required by spring. Never has there been such a call for men to serve the soldiers in the history of the world. Dr. John R Mott, head of the International Y. M. C. A. and George W. Perkins of New York, treasurer of the National War Work Council of the Y. M. C. A brought this message to the Pacific coast. Only men over draft age, of good moral character will bo considered for this service. It entails danger, privation and temptation and re quites stamina and judgment. Al ready 300 American huts and dug outs are under shell fire, eight Y. M. C. A. men have been killed since the present offensive opened on the western front, and other secretaries bave been gased. Y. M. C. A. huts are constantly subjected to German shell fire. It is no job for a man who does not possess courage or Is not ready to make the supreme sacri fice in order to Eerve the soldier and help win the w.-.r. It Is the greatest service the man over draft age can render in this world conflict. The Y. M. C. A. is operating 1300 huts In the French r.rmy and this number is to be increased to 2000. NO LIGHTLESS NIGHTS IN OREGON THIS YEAR Portland, Ore. There will be no llghtless nights in Oregon this year unless conditions change radically, according to Fuel Administrator Holmes today. Holmes' announce ment follows a report that the Na tional Fuel administration plana to again enforce llghtless nights throughout the east beginning July 10, as a means of saving coal. The situation in Oregon Is far dif ferent than that which obtains along the Atlantic seaboard and in the Middle West. Holmes is calling the attention of Washington to the fact that Oregon derives the bulk of her light and power from waterpower while the east depends on coal. On this account he says, there is no use in curtailing light consumption in Iklillg ;hx1 Few medicines have met with morn favor or accomplished more good than Chamberlain's Colic- and Diarrhoea Remedy. John F. Jautzen, Dolmeny, Sack., says of it, "I have used Cham berlain's Colic and Diarrhoea Remedy myself and In my family, and can recommend it Is being an exceptional ly fine preparation."
