ST. HELENS MIST. FRIDAY. JUNE 20, 19tt BOILING POINTS TELL THE .STORY Contrary to the opinion held by a Freat many people, the real value of gasoline Is not shown by the old fashioned gravity test. This test tells nothing about the vaporizing and combustive qualities of the fuel, as has been pointed out by the national bureau of standards at Washington. Only the boiling point test is really efficient. Boiling points, of course, mean ex actly what the words say. That Is, they are points on the thermometer at which a liquid will begin to boll. For a cold engine to start qulcklv the gasoline must vaporize at a low temperature. To get quick and smooth acceleration somewhat high er boiling points are necessary and for full power and long mileage tho fuel must have still higher boiling points. High quality gasoline must have a complete and continuous chain of boiling points, ranging from the low to the high. Combustion starts with the lowest and flashes on through the uniform chain from low to high with the result that there Is full powered, instantaneous combustion. Eliminate one link and the full powrr chain is broken. The famous Red Crown gasoline has the complete power chain. RENOVATE THE REFRIGERATOR A good many people who thorough ly believe in tha sanitary qualities of paint never think of giving the in terior of their refrigerators a coat, notwithstanding paint dealers sell cn enamel especially intended for re frigerators. One of the features of this special enamel is that it will not contaminate the food. This is by no means true of all enamels. It is difficult to think of anything which It is more important to keep thoroughly clean and sanitary than a refrigerator. Ptomaino poisoning and other serious diseases may result from neglect to do this. Of courhe, this advice to paint ap plies particularly to refrigerators having galvanized iron linings; those having porcelain or enameled linings require only frequent washing with soap and water to keep them clean and sanitary. FASHION NOTES The long tnd sarrcw train is still in favor. Long tailored coats are embroid ered all over. Silk corset laces are usad as lin gerie ribbons. Most of the afternoon frocks fall to the ankles. A much used satin is black, with gold stripes. Filetex is a new material charm ing for blouses. The newest capes hr.ve introduced the waistcoat. Buttons will be the chief trim ming for linen dresses. Moonlight blue Is a lovely tone for evening wear. Skirts show a gre-it ia-.ny rendant tali ornaments. Pin tucks form a daiaty and satis factory trimming. Hats of flowered voile have made their appearrruce. Light neutral shades dominate for wear with navy blue. Advertising in the Mist pays. POSTAL RATES CHANGE JULY 1 On July 1, three chenges In the postal rates will become effective. For a city letter or postal card, the rate will again be one cent, and for outgoing letters and other first-clnss mail, the rate will be two cents for er.ch ounce to any part of the United States and its possessions. Business firms and all others, who use the malls extensively wilt welcome the change because of the saving that will result therefrom. We may ex pect that the souvenir post card, will come into Its own again and ' that postmasters everywhere will enjoy better business. SWIFT TAKES OVER UNION MEAT COMPANY Swift & Company have announced to the Mist that on and after June 1, 1919, the business heretofore con ducted In Portland and the Pacific Northwest by the Union Meat Com pany, will be continued by, and in the name of Swift & Company, tiio 'present owners. Colt will retala the management as heretofore. HOUSEHOLD HINTS To measure a level teaspoonful or tablespoonful make smooth with a knife, but do not pat down. Most men save all their odd jobs for the day of rest. To remove brown marks from It-lies caused by baking in the oven rub them well with common salt. People do not tower so high above jou when you get them on an equal basis. Lemon Juice and salt Is an excel lent medium for cleaning bone knlfs handles. Apply the lemon juico first and then the salt.
