A religious body with two functions evangelistic, which is primary, and social relief, made necessary by the evangelistic and giving per manency to its most important results. Founded by the late General William Booth, London, 1865, first known as "The Christian Mission;" present name adopted 1878. Name derived from fact that the Army works for salvation of mankind, by the grace of God, from all forms of moral, spiritual and temporal distress. Form of government military ; tacitics militant and aggressive. BY WHAT LEGAL AUTHORITY DOES THE SALVATION ARMY EXIST IN THE UNITED STATES? Act of legislature, State of New York: "An Act to Provide for the Incorporation of the Salvation Army," Chapter 468 became law April 28, 1899. Incorporated in California in 1915. IS THE SALVATION ARMY LEGALLY ENTITLED TO RECEIVE GIFTS AND BEQUESTS FOR CHARITABLE PURPOSES? Yes- By section one of the act of incorporation. ' WHO ARE THE TRUSTEES? The Commander, Chief Secretary and Treasurer of the Salvation Army in the United States, ex-officio, with two officers or two lay members selected by these three. $2000 IN ONE HALF OF A DAY The members of the Elks Lodge who live in the St. Helens territory are going to raise $2000 in one-half day. This is the quota assigned to the district. Every American citizen who appreciates what the soldiers did, appreciates -what the SALVATION ARMY DID FOR THE SOLDIER. Columbia County citizens appreciate this and are going to help the Salvation Army "CARRY ON." The Drive will start on Monday morning, June 22. If a good Elk does not happen to call on you so you will have the privilege of contributing to this GREAT WORK, go to either the FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF ST.
