exterminated without a struggle. It was a task requiring courage and de termination, and the men who per formed it are deserving of full recog nition. But for the united action of the cattle men the grazing regions of the west would not be the wealth pro ducers they are today. CALL FOR FARMERS MEETING. Moscow, Idaho, March 4, 1902. Whereas, The present system of han dling farm products in the Palouse country is very unsatisfactory to the farmers thereof, from the fact that it costs the farmer the entire profit of his crop to handle it through the pres ent warehouse system, as it goes through a number of hands from the threshing machine to the exporter, and each one must have a "rake-off," and by the time it reaches the final pur chaser, the farmer is out from 5 to 7 cents more per bushel than he should be. Thus it is plain to be seen that the system now in vogue is detriment al to farmer; and Whereas, We believe that the farm ers, by thorough organization, can han dle the»r own produce and control the sale thereof, and by so doing save the expense of warehouse agents and the various "rake-offs" all along the line, together with the increase in price which would necessarily result from tne control of the sales; therefore be it Resolved, That it is the sense of this committee that a mass meeting of the farmers of the grain belt of Idaho and Washington be called to meet at Mos cow on some date to be fixed by this committee, not later than June 5, 1902, to agree upon some plan of organiza tion for the purpose of handling all lines of farm produce. Resolved, That a copy of these reso lutions shall be sent to the different subordinate clubs for their considera tion, and if favorable action is taken thereon by them, then this committee, after receiving due notice of the same, through its secretary, shall proceed to make the call in pursuance to the above resolution. In pursuance of the above resolu tion a delegate mass meeting of the Farmers' Club of Latah County, to gether with representative farmers from any locality where Farmers' clubs are not organized, either in Washing ton or Idaho, is hereby called to meet In Moscow, Idaho, June 5, 1902, at 2 o'clock; p. m., to consider the sugges tions therein set forth. It is important that a good representation of farmers be present therefore all farmers inter ested in marketing of their products should lend their presence and moral support to this meeting. FRANK CAMPBELL, President. By J. V. Carithers, Secretary-Treas urer. "THE BLAZED TRAIL." Stewart Edward White, author of The Blazed Trail," which has just ljeen published by McClure, Phillips & °-. and which went into a second cdi "on before the day of publication, has "a<l a more adventurous life than falls 11 the lot of most young authors. As 11 l»oy he spent much of his time in the oiests of Michigan, where his father, ''Winning as a trader and a "land oker," has since become a million '<■ through acquiring enormous tracts timber land. In spite of the fact fn»t he had plenty of money back of 'lm > young White elected to make his ' Wn way after his graduation from the University of Michigan in IK!l. r >. and struck out for the Black Hills with $100 in gold, and a gun. The hundred dollars soon went, and Mr. White fell beck on the gun for means of subsist ence. He got a job shooting game for a mining cam]) and did a little mining on his own account. When the super intendent of the camp lit out one day Mr. White was made temporary pay master, and got himself two-thirds lynched for paying the wrong men first: but being possessed of a glib tongue, talked himself out of the scrape. Next day in town they lent him a bucking horse, but as the beast bucked running, he was able to stick with it until well out of sight. Then, with the aid of a club, he, undertook to educate that horse. Later, when he was bringing more money into the camp, he was held up by a "greaser." After they had harmlessly shot at each* other several times, the greaser retir ed and the paymaster brought his wad safely into camp. In "The Blazed TraiF" he returns to his early roving grounds, the Michi gan woods, and depicts the perilous and exciting life of the "lumber-jack." For the last three years he has spent most of his time far beyond the bounds of civilization, one penetrating, with one white companion and an Indian guide, as far as Hudson Bay, and dis covering on the way a river large enough to be easily navigable for more than one hundred miles, which is not on any of the maps. Mr. White is at present living in New York, where he is a member of the Players' and the Alpha Delta Phi Clubs. He has just finished a novel, the scene of which is in the Hudson Hay country.
