MINING AND FINANCIAL. (Continued from Page C for the railroad fight for higher rates among the mine operators who have to pay for the ship ment of ore, fuel and supplies, it is hard to enlist the consuming public in the campaign1 for dearer copper. The curtailment program of the large producers has had its effect on the total output, but it has not resulted in pushing the use or the sale of the metal. From the first the expediency of the restriction method of increasing demand was questioned by students of trade conditions and their doubts have been strengthened by tho results of the experiment as far as it has been tried. Various items in recent issues of the mining papers show a trend toward a slower but more rational method of curing the copper indus try of what ails it. The treatment consists of the simple process of lowering production cost. The first conspicuous advance In this direction was made by the Utah Copper Company with the introduction of shovel mining and large ton nage concentration. The well-nigh magical in crease of the efficiency of its concentrating ma chinery at Garfield is the latest achievement in pursuance of the same policy. The Amalgamated took a stride toward the goal when it put up a new smelter in which the maximum of efficiency was combined with the minimum of expense. It has continued by in stalling electrical hoisting and tramming equip ment in its copper mines at Butte, thus lowering by one cent or more the cost of copper making In that camp. Unconsciously allied with these powerful factors are hundreds of unknown me chanics and engineers striving in cluttered work shops to devise simpler and less expensive ways of taking ore from the ground and of separating the metals from the waste. One of these inven tors has applied for a patent on a process for injecting a solvent into tho lode itself, pumping out the fluid and precipitating the copper in solution. It is not likely that this plan has been carried to a practical stage, but it suggests a line of research to the chemist offering revolu tionary possibilities. In Salt Lake City there is no telling how many devices in various states of incompleteness which, if they perform half their cre"Aors expect from them, will overturn present milling methods. At least one of these local inventions has made so remarkable a show ing in preliminary tests that persons permitted to view its operations are discounting already its effect on the stock and metal market Again, as the lower production cost idea super sedes the curtailment theory, some Brandeis will rise up, point an accusing finger at the mine and mill operators and ask: "What have you done toward applying scientific methods to your busi ness? You may not be losing a million dollars a day by your loose practices, but you are losing many a dividend that might be saved by a care ful study of your expenses." Obviously, "there is a reason" why some companies would not wel come a close investigation of where the money goes, but such companies, it is encouraging to note, are being wiped steadily from te mining map. The others have not discovered the advan tages of scientific management because the science itself is a new discovery. Purry S. Heath has spent the past week in the city, looking over his real estate Interests here, and says there Is no limit to Utah's resources. Would it not have sounded better, coming from Purry, if he had said that there was no statute of limitations on Utah's resources?
