Semloh Hotel Company iiHH H u Hi ranks. Her presence is one of ease, and her cos tumes were splendidly thought out and worn. Her Allan-a-Dale was a gem. Miss Edna Evans sang her way straight into the hearts df everyone in the house who had not heard her before, the Ou ers having experienced the same sensation in the charm of her past per formances. Her solo composed by Mr. Kimball, "I Always Love You, Dear," in the last adt, was sweetly rendered, though there was no particular reason for a high class vaudeville feature being interpolated. As usual, John D. Spencer was excruciatingly funny as the Sheriff of Nottingham. Mr. Spen cer's talents are so well known that they need no further exploitation. Suffice to say that in the role made famous by Barnabee, he was perfect George D. Pyper sang Robin Hood in splendid voice and gave to the character all that was re quired. He was a Robin Hood just this side of thirty, and that with practically no make-up. The Little John of Mr. Dougall was finely rendered; Horace Ensign's Friar Tuck was a clever bit of character work, and Fred Graham played Sir Guy acceptably. William BasseU cast as Will Scarlet was hardly at ease and can sing much better than he did the opening night. However, this may possibly be attributed to the fact that he is less experienced than the others, which usually ac counts for a nervousness that wears off after a first performance. Under the direction of Professor J. J. McClel lan, with the able assistance of Edward P. Kim ball, the entire opera was splendidly given with the exception of the Tinkers' chorus, which was badly played, sung and danced. However, this did not detract materially. Mr. Spencer and Wil liam Bernard staged the production and that is enough for the public to know it was well done. All in all, "Robin Hood" as given by this opera company reflects nothing but the greatest credit on everyone having anything to do with the pro duction. . "THE WOLF." Mr. Hall is very much an actor. His Jules Beaubien is one of the finest and most convincing portrayals of that role ever seen' locally, and this does not except Andrew Rob son's characterization of the part -when "The Wolf" was first given here, though the methods of the two men are widely different. The part Is one for which Mr. Hall is naturally suited and 1 at tho same time his mastery of stage business; the facility with which he accomplishes transi tions from one mood to another, the finish and polish of his work all stamp him as an actor of unusual ability, with a personality very much his own and experience and sufficient training to warrant the prediction that local playgoers will find a great deal of pleasure in his por trayals at the Garrick tho remainder of the season. He is, in any event, superior so far as one may judge from his performance the past week, to any other leading man seen here in stock the past six years. "The Wolf" as given by Mr. Hall, Mr. Sey mour, Mr. Sumner, Mr. Totten, Mr. Herblin and Miss Adair has developed this last day or two into a finely acted presentation of the Walter play. Every player in the cast is excellent, and in particular is this true of Mr. Sumner's McTav ish. To Miss Adair goes tho credit for a char acterization of the part of Hilda that left very little to be desired. As she gave it, the por trayal was a complete effacement of Miss Adair and a charn- terization of Hilda McTavIsh at once so faithful, so convincing and so admirably acted as to take its place as one of the two best portrayals tho Garrick's talented loading woman has given locally.
