bearing a burden; a dead doo. During
his long watch ho had surprised a
nursing mother, and felled it with his
bludgeon.
It hnd boon his wont to cut up his
gamo whoro he killed It and to take
away nothing but cholco morsels.
That day a strange thing had hap
pened; he had left a wish to show his
skill to the woman.
lie cast his victim on the ground be
fore her. Her legs trembled and her
hands beat tho air. Dumb from re
vulsion of feeling the woman turned
from him. lie selr.od her shoulders,
whirled her around and, with an ex
ultant howl, pointed his spread fingers.
The woman saw a littlo gray-brown
creaturo advancing on wavering logs
a nursling, with light, flnf hairs
upon its head, with mouth open, bleat
ing for its dead mother. It reached
the doe and fell between her out
stretched feet. With the little knobs

JUNE '
Could ever sunshine bo as gold, or heavens be as blue? ." j
Because we love hasJuno, the-witch, not daoIcedlhtSVsalf more fair? .' !
And oh, tho scent o' Summer wind that speaks to mo of you! '
And oh, tho weight of fragrant bloom tho lilac bushes bear!
Could over birdsong lilt out so in riotous delight?
The earth was ne'er so velvet green, whoro waves of blossoms
broak; '
The sea throbs liko a lover's heart throughout the magio night, I
And oh, th'o glory of the moon that makes my own heart aoho! I
'
Can June be quite so sweet again? Ah mei How strange It seems,
When I am gone, another Juno will sing her joyous song,
Tho birds will nost, and other loves will dream their rainbow dreams,
The lilac trees will boar again while other hoarts will longl
Imay not feol tho tender wind, or see tho flower's huo, '
I will not hark to birdsong, somo Juno as glad, as fair;
But will the sunshine seem as gold, tho heavens seem as bluo
To you, O Hoart I love so well, that Juno I am not there?
."'
on its infant brow it knockod hor
throat, and, bonding its knees, bur-,
rowed tho still breast.
The woman romomborod. She saw
again her child in the grip of the
eagle; she saw a nest built In the sky,
and' in it, lashed by dark wings, the
baby that had filled her arms.
Chaotic thought swirled in hor brain.
The mother, gazing with glazing eyes
on the thing doomed to tho bludgeon
or to tho beasts, cried to hor soul with
all the voices of a common mother
hood; and running to the thicket she
gathered loaves, covered the eyos of
the dead, and laid fond hand upon the
fawn.
Mah! Busy with the meat the man
saw nothing. The woman was uncon
scious of hor act. But in that hour
the soul gavo birth to its first up
ward impulse. Until that hour the
animal knew nothing but its own
necessities; in that hour an infinitesi
mal point in an organic cell received
its accolade, and a creaturo evolved
from tho dust of the ground estab
lished eternal correspondence between
grief and pity.
Tho long whine of a tiger thrilled
the forest. Ileuh! The man sprang
for a tree, and, howling, the woman
followed him.
Safe from danger, beyond the reach
of beasts, she jTut her fists to her
eyes, and Earth siw tho second tear;
tho prophecy of the soul.
The daily optimist saya: "Eeiy
one thinks his own burden heaviest."
Well, isn't it, to the iidiUdual?"
