PUBLISHED UNDER THE MANAGEMENT OF T. L. HOLM AN
AMERICA FOR ME.
By Henry Van Dyke.
OH ! it's home again, and home again, America for me !
My heart is turning home again to God's country.
To the land of youth and freedom beyond the ocean bars,
When the air is full of sunshine ; and the flag is full of stars.
It is good to see the old world and travel up and down,
Among the famous countries and cities of renown;
To admire the crumbly castles and monuments of kings,
But soon or late you have enough of antiquated things.
Oh ! London is a man's town ; there's power in the air ;
And Paris is a woman's town, with flowers in her hair ;
And it's sweet to live in Venice ; it's great to study Rome ;
But when it comes to living, there is no place like home.
I like the German firwoods in green battalions drilled;
I like the gardens of Versailles with flashing fountains filled;
But oh ! to take your hand, my dear, and ramble for a' day
In the friendly western woodland, where Nature has her way.
I know that Europe's wonderful, yet something seems to lack ;
The past is too much with her, and the people looking back ;
But the glory of the present is to make the future free
We love our land for what she is, and what she is to be.
So, it's home again, and home again, America for me !
I want a ship that's westward bound to plow the rolling sea ;
To the blessed Land of Room Enough beyond the ocean bars,
Where the air is full of sunshine, and the flag is full of stars.
' The A. F. of L. declaration damns German autocracy, exalts la
bor and does not mention strikes.

IT WAS TO BE EXPECTED.
XT seems that somebody has been fooling us a bit. We have been
given to understand that, so far as the President's immediate
official associates and advisers are concerned, they comprise a happy
and harmonious family. Perhaps so, but we are beginning to enter
tain grave doubts as to the truth of such representations.
Take that little flurry or it may have been a big one, for all we
know between the Food Administrator and the Director General of
the railroads one day last week. A food shortage was threatened in
several of the eastern states. Naturally, the citizens set up a howl
and their complaints were lodged against the food administration.
Hoover's alibi was that there was plenty of food in the country but
that he couldn't get the railroads to haul it, thus passing the buck
along to McAdoo. That took nerve, but those who know Hoover best
say that he has plenty of it for all practical purposes, and some to
spare. At any rate, he put the blame squarely up to the Director
General, who quite hotly retoited that he stood ready to haul food
stuffs in any amount, at any time and anywhere, if the Food Adminis
trator would only advise him where he could find the food and here
he was to haul it. So there you are ; you can take your choice.
