WILEY AND THE Di VORCE EVIL. , ;riiis is what the New York Worljl has to say regarding Dr. Wiley's now famous remarks at the cracker con vention, relative to good food and its relation to the fireside: Dr. Wiley has won new laurels in science by the discovery of the (bacil lus of divorce, which he finds lurking not in .drink or in dissipation, but in bad bread. Addressing the Biscuit Bakers' Association at Atlantic City, the head of the Pure Food Commis sion declared that "wifcy's bread has been more an enemy of domestic felicity than any other one thing, and .he" exhorted the association to banish the "great destroyer" of the home, dyspepsia, and "restore cly siumV by improving the quality of its output. It isra solemn trust the dis- ' . H charge of which should entitle the biscuit bakers to rank as the most benevolent of trade combinations. But the aspersions on "wifcy's bread" prompt certain reflections. The "bread that mother made" was above reproach, and mother was hcr scjf a bride a 'brief while ago. 0ILin hcritcd talent improves in other lines, what has caused its deterioration in bread-making? Is it bridge or mati--necs or membership in women's clubs?. Or is it patent milling pro cesses, alum, manufactured yeast and the disappearance of coal fires from kitchens? The association of "wheat- en loaves" with the gas ranges of, Iiurl'em flats is not intimate. But why should skill in bread-making be an accomplishment expected of a wife. She no longer cards wooh i or makes clothes for the household. The spinning wheel has gone from the home; why should the bread pan; and kncadling trough remain? Sfivall society return the conditions underj which "Adam delved and Eve span", merely to remove the sting from hoa-' ry witticisms about "wifcy's bread?" It is again noticed that when times are depressed men go back to the farm which is one result that cannot be deplored. Cleveland Plain Dealer, THE STUPID MAN NEEDS A CLEVER WIFE. I f But the Clever Man Can Get Along Nicely with a Stupid One. That a stupid 1111311 needs a clever wife needs no discussion, says Wil liam T. Stead. The stupider a man is, the cleverer ought his wife to be, ',J to make up for the stupidity of the male partner in the menage. A clever j- man can better afford to face the , struggle for existence with a stupid wife than can a stupid man. That is ! quite obvious. For, if 'cleverness may bo regarded as the intellectual stock ' in trade with which the married l couple start out to do business in the i world, the less capital that cither ' partner has, the more important it is that the other should be well provided with the indispensable clement neces sary for success in life. There is, therefore, some reason for recom mending that stupid men should .mar ry clever women and that stupid women should marry clever men, in order to make things even all round, On the other hand, the precept, "Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers," may be held to lay down to a general principle capable of be ing applied to the question now un der discussion. It is obviously dc sirablc that two people who arc to live together all their lives should be suf ficiently near together in, intellectual attainment to have interests in com mon, and to be tabic to understand each other when they arc left togcth cnin the endless tetc-a-tctc of matri mony, Delineator, 1 ' U ' ' ' ' ' ' THE CLEVER MAN NEEDS A WIFE WITH TACT. A Wife With This Gift Well De veloped is Indeed the Cleverest of Women. The problem as to whether a clc man needs a clever wife rests upon broad lines, and is, after all, very easy of solution, says Katherinc Cecil Thurston, in the July Delineator. Without doubt a clever man should have a clever wife, if the goal desired to be a successful marriage; but "clever" must not be taken ,as sy-
