FEW GRAVES FOUND WAR DEPARTMENT UNSUCCESS FUL IN LOCATING HEROES. Those Who Died in Battle of New Orleans Now Lost Forever to Country for Which They Fought. New Orleans, l-a. Although diligent Hcnrch Ib being made- here, under tho direction of the war department, for tho graves of soldiers who, under Gen. Andrew Jackson, won tho great battle of Now Orleans, little success has crowned tho effort. Tho records of the department show that In the fights of December 23 and 28, 1S1-1, and January 1 and G, 1815, thero were 55 killed, 1S5 wounded and 03 missing on tho American side. Many of tho dead arc (supposed to be in tho National cemetery at Chal motto, where a monument raark3 the sito of the famous victory, but tho names of tho dead aro for tho most part unknown, and tho search has not revealed tho identity of any burled thero. Across tho river from tho cemetery havo been found 12 graves. They lie n:ar a clump of pecan trees, about 200 feet from tho lovee and about 200 feet from the old fortifications. Tradition says that tho men belonged to tho Fifty-fourth infantry and that the bodies woro taken across tho river and buried thero by marines. Tho graves havo, no he-dntcnes. In Old St. Louis cemetery, No. 1, aro three graves situated near tho rear wall. They bear inscriptions in dicating that Oliver Parmloo of Now England, Asabul Hnmson of Halifax county, N. C; and William P. Canby, midshipman in tho United States navy, all of whom foil in tho battle of Now Orleans, aro burled there. Throe of the soldiers aro said to havo been taken to Opelnueas, La., and burled in the Catholic cemetery there, hut no record of their Interment has been found by tho department. In St. Louis cemetery, No. 2, is tho gravo of Dominique You, ono of tho plrato Lafltto's men, who tool: part in tho battlo. In tho same cemetery Is tho grave of Ursln Frederic, also a victim of tho English. Theso few graves are all that have been located of tho 55 that should contain tho known dead. Whore oth ers aro seems likely to remain as much of a mystory to tho war depart ment as it has to the local historians for two or throo generations. RAILROAD HEAD AS MAIL CLERK. President of Michigan Central Still Draws Salary from Government. Washington. Tho surprising Infor mation that Henry H. Ledyard, presi dent of tho Michigan Central railway, for 23 years has been carried upon tho rolls of the post oflfco department ns mall messenger at n salary of $1,000 per year, was divulged to tho houao of representatives tho other day by Rep resentative Murdock of Kansas. It appears that the Michigan Central railroad many years ago npplled to both Canada and tho United States for reimbursement for carrying tho malls ovor a strotch of railroad across tho Niagara rivor, which stretch consists of tho oxpenslvo bridge which the rail road malntnlns thero and over which it had not been nblo to collect mall carrying charges from either country, owing to tho fact that It was practical ly tho boundary lino between tho Uni ted States and Canada. Tho United States eventually made an arrangement whereby tho president of the road was appointed mall mes senger and the road was by this means given money sufficient to recompense It for the continual carrying of tho United States malls between tho edge of tho Niagara river and Its centor, which Is tho literal boundary lino. The mall contracts, according to law, could provldo for the transportation of mall only to tho bank of tho river. It Is assorted that President Ledyard is still drawing his mail clerk's salary. It is an elm and re markably well preserved. It has stood probably for several centuries, and it kwfca good for another century or two. la the days of the fifties, before Le Clair had the title of city, the tree -was a favorite resort for the boys, aad their old swimming hole was un der its shade. Few of those boys arc loft to-day. Some were killed or died In the civil war, some emigratod to the land of gold and never returned, while others have been dropping off one by one. In more recent yoars, and during the time that rafting and rivor traffic was at Its height, tho tree was a home for tramps and bums, and also river men who wcro broke and waiting to catch a boat either up or down tho river, it often making little difference which. It was by these men given the name of "The Green Tree hotel," hence tho namo "Green Tree," and It is now known as such from ono end of tho Mississippi to tho other. If the old tree could talk it doubtless could re veal many n dark and deep-laid plot to crack a safe or hold up a train, for nil kinds of men have found rest and shelter under its broad and protecting branches. Tho devotion of tho people Is obvi ous. The grnss plot on which tho troo stands Is surrounded by a fence, and tho trunk of the tree Is protoctcd by a fence also, so no ono can approach closo enough to mar or defaco it. When tho promoters of tho D., R. I. & N. W. railroad wore asking for a franchise from the city and property on which to locato their depot and switches It was first thought that tho tree would have to bo removed In or der to provide tho required amount of room. Hut tho council refused to voto for tho franchise if tho tree hnd to bo sacrificed. Fortunatoly tho plans woro changed, and when Frank P.
