GAVE NAME TO TOLL ROADS
To Weapon Carried by Collectors Can
Be Traced the "Turnpike" of
Modern Days.
Undoubtedly tho name turnpike, as
applied to some roads, 'comes from the
fact that pikes or gates were sot across
tho roads by the keeper or toll
collector. In addition to collecting
tolls, It was a part of the toll-keeper's
business to keep the road In repair.
Ills wages and other expenses for
doing this were received from the
tolls collected from tho people who
used tho road to ride on In carriages,
wagons, etc. Tho IJook of Wonders,
published and copyrighted by the Bu
reau of Industrial Education, Inc.,
Washington, D. C, says that In the
early dnys tho toll-collector was armed
with n pike, a long-handled weapon
with n sharp Iron head, which ho used
to prevent people who (raveled his
road from going by without giving up
their toll. Later on a swinging gate
was built across the road, which made
It unnecessary to use tho .pike, though
tho name was retained, for no ono
could pass while tho gate barred tho
way. When the passerby had paid his
tolls, the toll-collector opened the gato

the gato remained closed and tho
driver had to turn back or decido to
pay. Hence comes the name turn
pike In some parts of the country
thoy call these highways toll toads.

now In order. Among all tho things
