WHY TIMES ARE HARD.
The statement of the associated hanks of New York for Ihe week ending March 20, shows a marked reduction in the reserve, for the cash and holding have decreased not less than #5,59 000. The sur plus reserve Bhows similar contrac tion, the loss for the week $4,094,- --575, bringing the excess cash in the banks to $48,168,975, which is over ♦9,000,000 less than was reported three weeks ago. [n this period, loans have increased the same amount, while deposits are only $5()0,0D0 heavier. The loss 1 of nearly $0,000,000 in cash during the last week is easily accounted for. The banks paid out $6,000,000 to the treasury on account of cus tom lior.se withdrawals of bonded goods, and this money mv flved an acs'.iai transfer of funds out of banks. since March 10, the loan expan sion has been $8,795,000, but as $6,000,000 at least must have been added to this sum last week, the contraction in other outstanding loans appears plain. The banks are still decreasing their circula tion", the reduction of $258,400 last week, making a total contraction of $11,808,000 since December 17. In the early history, as recorded in the Bible, one of the principal animals referred to ns beasts of burden was tbe ass. fit fact, it seems to have been an almost in dispensible animal; not only for the purpose of transporting the property of those nomadic inhabi tants from one place to another, but the inhabitants themselves. Our Saviour employed one of those animals ns a means of transporta tion in one of his journeys while on earth. Admirers of the beautiful are not Inclined to enthuse very much over the handsome features of the ass; at least 1 have never yet seen its handsome features transferred onto canvass and placed in any collection of n.';.\t T - TiKs, The usefulness of the ani -mal in its proper sphere is disput ed by no one. Of course, in s highly civilized community with the modern appliances and the arts and sciences, the poor little ass would be oat of his element. When! the Spaniards made their conquest of Mexico they introduced the ass as a means of transportating their supplies from one point to another in that country. The ass of Spain has always been considered the finest animal of that species known, while its descendant, the Spanish burro of Mexico, is the homliest, most insignificant and contempti ble. One of tbe peculiarities of the animal, aside from its long, ears, is its inclination to wa.nl to bray on any and all occasions. The fact of its voice not being particu larly musical seems to cut no figure. The only instance on rec ord of an animal of that species being endowed with the power of speech, was the one reported to have been ridden by Balaam. Modern history does not record an instance of a quadruped being thus endowed. That faculty seems not to have been inherited b} r tLo de scendants of that animal, but to have been transferred to the biped; some species oi which, while not possessing the long ears of the quadruped, have all the other char acteristics.
