ROBERT A. TURNER, EDITOR.
W* understand Gov. Bogen is
about to bring cut another book
under the title of "My Peculiar
View*." Judging from the notori
ety he is gaining in the dispensing
of the patronage of hi office be
should bring cut a book entitled,
"How 1 Manage to Run the Office
of Governor and Ignore Election
Promises." We believe Mark
Hani.a would willingly pay a
handsome sum for information of
that kind. It would be cheaper
than laying tip for repairs as Mark
is now doing, worrying over the
importunities of men he promised
office during the last campaign.
We merely offer this as a kindly
suggestion Some people can take
a hint without a kick.
Gov. Rogers says:
''One man, a prominent
'middle of-the-roader,' by
the way, importuned me
within erie hour of the
time I was nominated at
Ellensburg for one oi the
most prominent places
within the gift of the gov
ernor."
Who was this middle-oNthe
reader? Give his name to th
public and we guarantee that even
honest, upright reformer in the
state of Washington will condemn
his action as freely as they do
yours, Gov. Rogers. We believe
in exposing fraud wherever found,
don't you governor? Was that
prominent middle-of-the-roader a
Kittitai county man?
A CERT AIS fellow who lives less
than a thousand miles from this
city says he don't understand why
it is that The Dawn is eternally
kicking about either the state or
county officials. Well, to be
pointed, Thk Daws was born a
kicker and has been kicking ever
since. It has a just cause for
kicking and never kicks without a
just cause. We have been preach*
Ing reform for 20 years and now
that we have been instrumental in
helping to bring about a victory
and also in the election of a few re
formers for revenue, we propose to
do our part of the kicking and ex
posing of these frauds and compell
ing them to do, as far as possible,
the square thing, and a man, we
care not who he may he, that will
be satisfied with less, is no reformer
at all. Every true populist and
every honest democrat and silver
republican believe in the thorough
exposure of fraud and corruption
wherever found, and while one in
a thousand may condemn Thk
Dawn for its kicks, we are glad to
know that the better element of all
classes, regardless of party, race,
creed or color, heartily sanction its
work. We believe in either prac
ticing what we preach or shut up
shop.
Miles C. Moore declines on ac

Some people talk a good deal
about sound money, who rarely
ever hear the sound of money.
Aa all wealth is the product of
labor, there is something wrong
when labor is dependent on wealth.
WHO a man says that politics
is too foul a pool for women to en
ter, he confesses that he is himself
unclean.
I> the peoples party desires to
be honest with the people, it will
profit in 1898 by the mistakes made
in 1896.
The man who will abandon his
principles for the sake of an office
will in turn betray the party which
In order that men may retain
their manhood, it is necessary that
tbey he aide to live without asking
favors of others.
Nothing pood in government
should he withheld from a people
who walk Uprightly to the ballot
box and vote for it.
The revenue reformer is a detri
ment to any party. He is a leech
on the body politic aud at virmin,
he should be destroyed (cast
aside.)
Give American workingmen an
opportunity to labor, by doing
away with monopoly in land,
money und transportation, and
they will need no other protection.
The man who knows how to
make money f»r himself, at the ex
pense of the people, is not neces
sarily the best Joan to choose for
tlie management of the people's af
fair-.
A real reformer is one who is
willing to sacrifice time and money
for the good ol humanity without
hope of reward any further than
the great mass ol humanity will
receive.
With b steady tecord of 15,000
business failures a year, as the
fruit of "government by financiers,"
would it not be well for the great
plain people to take up the govern
ing business for a while?
Thk rancher-- of this valley who
see their farms sold under a mort
gage may console themselves with
the happy thought that the sugar
trust is making a profit of sixty
per cent a year on its investment.
Fusion papers are not coerced
into silence by the fear of loss of
party power because of adverse
criticism of the ollicial acts of the
people's servants in office, In this
respect they differ from the republi
can press of the state, which never
even dared whimper, however fla

by the timeservers of the g. o. p.—

We should have a city ordinance
prohibiting the sale of bankrupt
stock of other cities at public auc
tion within our city limits, or an
ordinance taxing the same so high
t that no concern could afford to pay
, the license. Our home merchants
pay their tax to help support the
city and county and are entitled
to protection. Their motto should
be to live and let live and the city
should guarantee them against
competitors who drop in for a week
lor so only with a lot ol shoddy
and bankrupt goods and who pay
| nothing toward defraying tho ex
penses of the city or county.

City Council Doings.
Last Mono" ty, May 17th, tlie city
council held its regular semi
monthly session. Mayor dray and
a full council were present.
In the matter of the much dis
cussed right-of-way through the
Shoudy ditch, Mr. Shoudy refused
the city's offer of $1000 and made
counter offer specifying $3000 as
the sum to heal his wounded feel
ings, by letting the city derive a
benefit from the proposed enlarge
ment of hi.- ditch. This was ob
jected tn, and tbe city made him
and offer of $1500 for right of way. 1
Ordinance No. 252, entitled "An
Ordinance to License and Regulate
Auctioneers," was passed without
a dissenting vote A large num
ber of our prominent citizens were
pre-ent, watching the proceedings
of tlie council with great interest.
The ordinance regulating and
licensing bicycles was read and
laid on the table for future consid
