[From the Prairie Farmer.] JACKSON COUNTY, May 27. Eat. Prairie Farmer: I am sorry to state the destructive "Armr Worm" is upon as in innumerable multitudes. (Scarcely a meadow or grass plat will escape entire de struction. So numerous are tbey in some places after having mowed down lbs mea dows, tbey next attack tbe young corn, tbe wheat, and oven clean the weeds before them. And it is even - difficult in some places- to , keep tbem ont of the' bouses. This is no exaggeration, but on the contra ry, falls far short of a full description of their proceedings. - ' Tbey made their appearance about the last days of April, in the meadows and and grassy yards aud plats. The cold weather and backward spring favored, thejr growth and increase, for they dread the hot sun. Having eaten out tbe meadows, and warm weather coming on, they begun to travel from fiold to field, in some . places causing tbe roads to appear as, a black, mo ving masv The hogs would devour, until satiated, and then lyiug down to rest, woud instantly be covered with the worms. Ditching against them, appears to. be th e most effectual method of warding off .their attacks, I will gather. ivbatw&rinAteMXKWceraiiig their history and habila, I oaev and give -it and a full description of thexo is the Far mer, ere long. C. THOMAS. Douglas' Opinion of Davis. Senator Douglas hsd a power of will al most unequaled, which he Hon. Schuyler Colfax likens to the roassiv, driFngi .wheel of a locomotive, propelling, not only the engine itself, bat the fsr reaching train be hind. Mr. Colfax says: Though widely separated , front . Judge Douglas in our. political affiliations, our, re lations with him during the many years we have known biro,, were always personally cordial. But this was. only in accordance with his usage. He would invite to bis ta ble the very : men with whom he; had tbe sharpest political encounters, and perhaps tbe next day enter the lists again with ibera. in all tbe . acerbities pf controversy. lie would often remark;, that he tried to pay up bis political debts as he went-along, ee.thet he would have no trouble with thero in aoj cial intercourse, and would leave none for his executors to settle, He so rarely at tacked or denounced any on in social eon venation, that we, were struck, years ago, with remarks of hia, addressed to a Massa chusetts Congressman and ourself. in retard to Jefferson Davis, whom be declared then, with apparently prophetic forecast, would prove himself utterly disloyal to his coun try before be died. Gen. Scott's Plan to Capture Richmond. Rome cariosity hunter went to General Scott tbe other day to ascertain bia plans in regard to advancing troops on Richmond Tbe General informed him confidentially that tbe advance, of course, would be. very rapid. The Fire Zouaves would lead the way aa soon aa it was determined to take Rich mood, and tbey would employ one in Richmond to ring, tba Je-beDs, and th Zouaves would aeoo a upon it. - The Character of the Troops at Washington. inaton. Tbe Washington correspondent -of the Cioeinnati Commercial writes! Thousands of the private, soUijers nave the faces of gentlemen of .eaucatiort and understanding. There is reported to bo a great contrast between the 'southern" offi cers and privates, in favor of the former.' I have seen regiments here in which I think tbe contrast is 'decidedly ' in favor of the privates. It is a most interesting study to mark the faces of the men of regiments, as tbey arrive and march up tbe avenue.- - You see high platoons of high-nosed, firm-jawed, Beavuy-Bearded, keen-eyed men who never left home to go a soldiering for the fun of the . thing.'.- They- -have felt it a duty to gas to vindicate tbe radiant old flag our fathers bora,, and roakttain t he Govern men t our fathers founded and -tbey -will -do- it.
