The Lake Charles postmaster ship is yet in doubt, as will he seen by the following special from Washington in Saturday's Tinies Demoorat: The failure of the Senate to confirm the nomination of Maeon for postnmster at Lake Charles, which was sent in by the President some time ago, is he lieved to portend up good to the nominee, and the prediction is made to-night that the nomination will be withdrawn. It ia alleged that charges have been preferred against Mr. Mason, and that the appointment is being bitterly fought by the friends of Mr. Her wig on* the committee oh postof flees and postroads. The Preea of laut Wedneaday contained an article relative to the Commercial's unit with the parish, and In which the writer completely ignored the real facts in the case. It aaya "the law is explicit in regard to electing a parish printer, and at the meeting of tlie police Jnry on the first Mon day in .Inly, 1811«, they proceeded, under advice from their attorney, to elect a printer, whose term of office began then. Joe. F. Reed waa elected, etc." Here we wish to inform the young writer ofthe I'ress that he is mistaken regard ing the day of election, for Mr. Reed waa not elected nntil Friday, •Inly 17th, the last day ofthe ses sinn. Again, lie is wrong in stat ing that "at that meeting, while the police jury was yet in session, Mr. Reed filed the required bond and the minâtes were turned over to him by the police jury clerk." The truth of the matter is that Mr. Reed's bond was not accepted until July 22, and the proceedings were never turned over to him at all, for we yet have the original copy in our possession. We will state further that the proceedings were np in type before the bond was a bond, and that the proceed ings appeared in this paper two weeks before they were published by the Press, they having copied them from the Commercial. These are the facts upon which the Commercial won its sait, and whether or not they sait the Press we care very little. As to the araonnt paid the Press being a dead loss to the taxpayers of the parish, the Press "states it authentically that if the police jury have made au error they will stand good for the damage." This is just as it should he, for the tax payers should not have to pay twice for one thing. The Press says "we can further say on the part of the police jurors that no prejudice existed in the minds of the members." Right here we wish to inform the editor of the Press that he knows nothing of the facts that existed for us to say it was a case of pre judice on part of the police jury against this paper. We don't claim that the nine police jarors are prejudice against us bat we do claim to know that there are a few of them who are; the knowl edge of others to the contrary notwitstandiug. The Charter Squabble. Onr people are considerably stirred np over the very serious condition of affaira that bas come to the front since the filing of the injunction suit agaiust the city At the council meeting last Mon day night it was learned from Chairman Lyons, of fluauce com mittee, that the city bauks had positively refused to loan money to run the city government unlit fall, owing to the uncertainty of the legality of the city charter. Mr. Lyons' report before the council was the cause of considerable talk on the part of the aldermen Some- thought the best thing now to do would be to diaebarge ait city officials, while others thought different. It was finally decided that a ooaimittee consietiog of Mayor Crowley, Aldermen Mc Cain and Kirkwood, he appointed to confer with representative citi sens, the Board of Trade and Com Hierein! Clnb, to see if something coold not be doue to abridge this crisis. The monthly expenses of the city will reaoh about oue thou sand dollars, without a dollar on haqd or in sight anlil the fall tax mouey will commence coming in. Things now are in a muddle to eay the Icaet of 11, aud the prospects for a better atate of affairs will remain lu the dark until the oourta will* decide the legality of onr obarter. There will be widespread sor row in New Orleans and Algiers this morning when it is known that the brilliant Miss Bertba Koppel is no more. For the last three weeks the life of tbie gifted lady was bang in the balance, and as the days slowly dragged by the straggle between the éxpert pby sicians and loving relatives and friends and the black-winged an gel of death grew sterner and more hopeless. About three weeks ago Miss Koppel was first taken with the low type typhoid fever, which, at 7:.T0 o'clock last uight, sapped the last atom of vitality, and the tired sufferer closed her eyes and peace fully weut to sleep. In the death of a woman like Miss Koppel the city's woman hood loses a noble, earnest, active and learned leader, who did not confine her efforts to the sex, but strove also for civilixatiou and humanity.—Picayune, Jone ». Miss Koppel was well known here, and the newa of her death will be received with eorrow by her friende and relatives to Lake Charles, and whom we join in ex tending aympathy to the bereayed family to their great loss. A. H. PatterTwïïb E. C. Atkins & Co., Indianapolis, Ind., writes: "I have never before given a testi monial in my life. But I will say that for three years we have uever been without Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhcea Remedy lu the bouse, and my wife would aa eooo think of being without Hour as a bottle of this Remedy in the summer season.
