NO TIME FOR CAUTION
This is not the year for Seward men
to he cautious. The growth of the
town has been hampered all summer
and fall through lack of building
material. There was a justification for
thi> in the spring when the town was
Mill an experiment, hut that time is
past. If the business men of Seward
want the town to grow they must carry
stocks to meet the demands they expect
in the future.
Several buildings are now standing
half-finished because there i> no mater
ial to proceed with construction,
others would he under way if there
were any assurance that the lot owners
could get the material to complete
them promptly. A local merchant
>aid this week that he had been wait
ing for weeks to get the lumber to
build a live-room cottage. A young
man came in on the Oregon with
money to build a large lodginghouse.
He could not get material to finish any
part of it and threatens to go out on
the next boat. It* he does bo will not
curry below a Battering report of the
town, and nobody can blame him it lie
tolls exactly what he found here.
It i> true that the steamship corn
paries are partly* to blame for condi
tions. If they would put enough boats
on the run to carry freight as fast as it
N ordered instead of leaving it piled
vv on the docks at Seattle there would
ho more building material in Seward
today. The companies say they have
chartered all the boats they can g*et,
which is probably true, but it they
want to hold the business of this port
they must change the system ot hunt
ing for boats after the freight is piled
up on them. They should start a little
sooner. Somebody else may* start first.
No apology is offered to readers of
the Catewav for the enlargement of
the paper to four pages, increasing its
J/.e 1 *\ more than one-third. Seward
merchants wanted more space in which
to tell what they have for sale and the
easiness manager said it would he had
judgment not to take all the adver
tisements he could get. He insists
that they are more interesting reading
than editorials and pay better.
It-looks funnv at this distance to see

the jamboree in the Seattle convention
over the nomination of a delegate to
Congress who will have as much chance
of getting a seat in the National House
as John l). Rockefeller has of getting
through the pearly gates. The passage
of a camel through the eye of a needle
i> easy in comparison.
While the Alaska convention has
been in session the Russian revolu
tionists have been total]v unable to

create noise enough to make them
selves heard.
When men with money to pay for
beds have to sleep on hotel tloors or
warm chairs it looks as if a building
boom is due in Seward.
The men who waited so long at Sel
dovia for a boat might have located
homesteads. They had time enough
to prove up.
It begins to look as if the rain supply
in this neck of the woods has been
vex ha listed.

for posing as the wife of James .1. Hill,
after she had borrowed considerable
money under the pretence.
