SUBSCRIPTION RATES: One Dollar per Month: Ten Centsa Copy SEWARD, ALASKA, OCT. 24, 15)08 FOR MORE UNITY The suggestion comes from one of the good teachers of Alaska that there ought to be a teachers’ convention called next summer at some point in the territory. The is a good one and should have the support not only of all the teachers in the gov ernment schools, but of the teachers In all the s*huols in the territory. The schools are necessarily far separated! and there is consequently likely to he | much diversity in methods of instruc tion as well as in courses of study. The very lact of the isolation of the * Schools, instead of being a reason tor not j calling the teachers together, makes such a convention all the more neces sary in order that the teachers may formulate lines of work that will have more of uniformity, and thus become more effective in properly educating the pupils under their charge. It might seem that the great dis tance by which t be government schools are separated would be an insur mountable object in the way of a suc cessful convention of teachers, but distance do°s not stauu in the way of bolding a successful meeting of the National Educational Association in the states such year, and while the convenience of travel is greater there, the pluck and love of the work on the l part of the teachers in this territory will , more than make up for the iav*,t\of con- j venience in modes of travel. Alaskans easily surmount difficulties that would seem insurmountable barriers to those accustomed to all the ease and com-j forts of the states. It would not be a difficult matter to assemble the greater part of the principals of Alaska schools in a convention once a year,; Such an organization would he an iu-: Spiration to the teachers. it would ; also be a means whereby they could j make their work more uniform, and | they would receive in addition a new j Impetus and new ideas for the more1 successful prosecution of the selfsacri ficing work in which they are en gaged. . Skating on uie Lake The cold weather of tlie past wet k j has formed a good thickness of ice on 1 the little lake north ol the ice pond, and as there is no snow a tine natural I skating rink has been formed, and the j young people are enjoying the oppor. tunity for wholesome exercise before the winter's snows come to spoil their enjoyment.
