Agents-Seward, Alaska PANAMA CANAL DELAYED Subterranean Lake Under Lock Cause of Additional Outlay of Time and Money. It is reported that the completing of the Panama canal will necessarily be delayed for several years more than I the public had been led to suppose. ■ The discovery of a subterranean lake under the site of one of the proposed big locks will be the cause of the de lay. According to reports the exist ence of the lake has been known by the engineers for some time, but had been kept secret. It is supposed that the object of suppressing the knowl edge of this new difficulty to the com pletion of the canal was in order that the work might be carried forward as far as possible before it became known that a difficulty existed which would cause a delay of several years in the work, and an expenditure of a much larger amount of money than had been planned.
