IMPEACHMENT OF SULZER ON IN N. Y. SENATE Albany, X. V., Sept. 19.—Upon the convening of the state senate yesterday noon, sitting as a board of impeach ment for the trial of Governor Sulzer, D. Cady Herrick, chief attorney for the accused, arose and stated that the dis tinguished defendant would not be present in person; that he would be represented by counsel only. The presiding otlicer, Senator Wag- j net*, ordered the clerk to read the arti cles on which the impeachment pro- j ceedings are based. These are: Article 1-Making a false statement j of the receipts and expenditures of his gubernatorial campaign. Article 2—Perjury. Article 3-Bribery of witnesses Article 4—Threatening of witnesses. Article .7— Larceny. Article <5— Tsing campaign funds for j stock gambling. ____ KILLS WIFE AND j SHOOTS OFFICER; - Kverett, Sept. 19—James Schraler,1 a member of the local fire department, shot and killed his wife, and mortally wounded a police officer who sought* to tuKe him in custody, following the j tragedy. Upon the complaint of Mrs Schraler, the husoand had been cun video, on a minor charge, and sent to jail. This so angered him, that upon; his release, he determined to kill her. j • Schraler is in jail, charged with mur-1 der. _ EVERETT REPORTS A FOUL MURDER Everett, Sept. 19—A watchman of \ one of the local luraoer mills was found | dead this morning, a bullet hole through ; his head telling of the cause of his j death. Party lines RADIUM PROVES EFFICACIOUS IN CANCER CASES; London, Sept. 19— Radium,the great | discovery of French scientists, is prov ing its effectiveness in the cure of cancer, long regarded as an incurable] malady. Many victims of this dread affliction, who have undergone the ra dium treatment at Middlesex hospital, have been dismissed andpronunced en tirely cured. Physicians of the Middlesex hospital have long experimented with radium as a cure for cancer and maladies of a similar nature. They declare it has wonderful curative powers, when pro perly applied. Olsen unu Get chell brought out $1,200 in gold dust, the result of some six weeks mining, with the difficulties attendant upon opening ground in a new camp. They operate a claim on Albert creek. Mc Cormack devoted ids time to pros pecting. The strike is not on Alfred creek, as first reported, but on Albert creek, just over the divide, This creek flows into Crooked creek, which in turn em pties into the Nelchina river. Othel tributaries of Crooked show better! prospects than Albert. The returning miners say that there is an area of some twenty miles square comprising the headwaters of the Nelchina river, which is a possible gold-bearing region. The outlook for j REFUGEES FROM MEXICO TELL CF REBEL OUTRAGES San Diego, Sept. 19—One hundred; American refugees from Mexico nrriv-: ed here last evening. Nearly all are ; destitute. They tell harrowing tales j of Mexican mistreatment of Ameri-j ican subjects. Especially are j they bitter against the rebels. They j say that roving bands of rebels, who are little better than brigands, are stalking about the country, pillaging' and looting the smaller settlements. Properties of American mining companies especially fall a prey to the loot-seeking bands. PANKHURST TO BE IN SOCIETY New York, Sept. 19.—[f the U. Everybody in the Knik country who can possibly get away is heading for the strike, as there is plenty of ground open to local ton. Ed. Wood, the packer, who wiil leave Knik with a pack train Monday, enroute to his headquarters at Valdez, has contracted to take all the freight he can handle to the strike. Forty claims have been recorded at the Knia recording district, which takes in the Nelchina country. Knik is the nearest settlement and the logi cal gateway to the new camp. That the strike is legimatc and that is one of great possibilities is the be lief of Milo Kel’v, member of the ter ritorial legislature: .T. B. Dyer, depu ty U. S. marshal at Knik. and Thomas Jeter, of Ship creek. They talked with McCormack, Olsen and Getchell, whom they declare to he reliable men, and saw the gold dust. BRITISH WILL MT PERMIT A WAR ON CHINA Tokio, Sept, 19-The British govern ment- has notified ihe rla; anese govern ment that it will *ive diplomatic sup port to Japan in the matter of collect ing indemnity claims growing out of the killing, by Chinese rebels, of Jap anese subjects at Nanking, hut declines to countenance a military or naval demonstration on the part of Japan against the Chinese republic. Great Britian, it is asserted, is alar med lest a demonstration would lead to the dismemberment of the Chinese* republic. Such an outcome, the Brit ish would view with disfavor.
