SEWARD DAILY GATEWAY GATEWAY PUBLISHING CO. G. L. JUDSON. - - - LESSEE SUBSCRIPTION RATES* One Dollar per Month: Ten Cents a Copy Seward, Alaska, March 10, 1014 LESLIE’S JUMBLES. According to the record; of the whaling station at Seagirt on the Pacific side of Vancouver island, a whale was caught recently that had a ton of bone in its head. We estimate that if the hone in the heads of two of these creatures could he graded on a man, that particular individual would make a good running mnto, from an intellectual stand point, for the Editor of Leslie’* Weekly. Tn the issue of February 26, of this paper, appears an article entitled “Unlocking a Long Neglected Empire," hv one Oswald F. Schuette, that for ignoranceof subject, misstatements of fact, common error, ! and all around lack of knowledge per-j raining to Alaska, is the worst wo j have ever read, not excepting state- | ments by some of our congressmen. | Among some of the most glaring errors ! is a picture of the water front at Sew- j ard entitled “Valdez, Alaska, where | the construction of a railroad from j Cordova to Fairbanks may begin” and ! jus* below appears a picture of the water front of Valdez, labeled “Town j of Seward, on Coronation bay one of the proposed starting points of the Government Railway." Tn another part of the article, lie mentions Sew ard as being on Controller bay, as well as the proposal to start the “Cordova- i Fairbanks line from Valdez.” It is har'd fur one to believe that any person so ignorant of a subject would attempt to write an article on the same, and harder to*believe that an intelligent editor would accept such an article and give it publicity without at least looking into the facts of the matter, unless the article was published to wilfully mislead and confuse the read- f ing public. Last summer Leslie's sent a repre sentative, Edgar Allen Forbes, to j Alaska with the Seattle Chamber of! Commerce excursion. Since his re turn, Mr. Forbes has written a num-1 ber of clever discriptive articles con cerning Alaska, but through them all has been noticed the underlying strata of kow, towing to ‘‘big business,” on a line with the editorial policy of the paper he represents, which never overlooks an opportunity to boost for the big interests and especially the Gugirenheims, with a full page boost for Cordova, a Gugg town, out of •which runs a Gugg-owned railroad, that the Yid aggregation are doing their best to unload on the present administration, but without a chance of success. i The Carstens Packing Go.
