H ALIF AX-N ORTH AMPTON OIL MEN IN CODE MEET TOLD THEY HAVE 5 DAYS TO GET THEIR HOUSES IN ORDER Major Newsome Is Chairman Of Two-County Compliance Board Oil Code BROWN SPEAKER A comparative “hand-full” of Halifax and Northampton County oil men gathered at the court house at Halifax last Friday night, April 27th, for the purpose of straightening out matters pertain ing to the oil code which has been in effect since September 2nd. C. A. Brown, of Charlotte, executive secretary of the North Carolina State Pe.traleum Code, was present at the meeting to authentically an swer all questions. The small at tendance at this meeting was un accounted for, as it had been well advertised that Mr. Brown would make a personal appearance at the meeting. Calling the meeting to order, M. C. Newsome, Roanoke Rapids oil man, who is chairman of the local NRA Oil Code Compliance Board, embracing the counties of Halifax and Northampton, intro duced Mr. Brown to his audience. After a stirring 45-minute talk, in which Brown stressed the ser iousness -of living up to code re quirements, he told his listeners that the government was inclined to give them “only five-days to get your houses in order.” Altho conditions in North Carolina have been lax, Mr. Brown said, these lax conditions are a thing of the. past, and men in the oil business, wholesale and retail, may look for action in enforcement of the code. Particularly in the matter of wag es and hours paid to employees, and to the posting of prices for each commodity sold in the sta tion, will enforcement officials give strict attention. Mr. Brown further pointed out that the most flagrant violators of code agreements coming to their attention at this time was those stations who had not posted their prices, and who were not up to the minimum wage agreement. Brown, a tall, handsome man was an impressive, forceful speaker, and after his talk there was an impromptu discussion in which he answered all questions, and, as he reminded his audience more than once, answered them “authenti cally.” The local committee, headed by Newsom, is composed of R. P. Allen, secretary, Roanoke Rap ids, E. F. Bounds of Weldon, N. C., G. S. May of Littleton, H. G. Bland of Kelford. This committee Has Telephone Battle NEW YORK . . . Dr. Alton A. Brown, in closing the meeting, stressed the fact that the petro leum code was an iron-clad agree ment, to which all operators must live up. “Its a federal law, gen tlemen, with plenty of teeth. There will be government inspectors a round at a later date, and it is our eai’nest advise to you to have your houses in order,” he said, in con clusion.
