NEEDY ARE AIDED BY , WOMAN'S CLUB DEPT. One hundred and thirty school children and 18 people outside the schools are receiving milk from the Welfare Department of the Wo man’s Cluh, according to Mrs. R. B. Barrett, at a meeting of the de partment last Monday in the home of Mrs. C. N. Wheeler. Mrs. Bar rett, chairman of the Welfare De partment, said that some people had received coats as a result of the “Trade in your old coat” pol icy adopted by the Quality Shop. Mrs. Bahnson Weathers an nounced that the same plan that was used last year at the Woman’s Club meeting in December would be followed this year. Each mem ber will bring a toy which will be distributed by the members of the department to the underprivileged. Mrs. J. W. Martin, chairman of the Welfare Dept, last year report ed that the outstanding work last year consisted in giving milk and clothes to the needy. The appointment of Mrs. Gordon Berkstresser to the Home Service division of the Red Cross was an nounced at the meeting. Mrs. Berk stresser will have charge of supply ing yeast to pellagra sufferers. The following committees were appointed for the coming year: A committee for checking conditions and results in cases that milk is supplied, consisting of Mrs. J. M. C. Covington, chairman, Mrs. T. M. Jenkins, Mrs. E. D. Harbour, Mrs. W. A. Wolhar, and Mrs. Upshur Higginbotham; a hospital commit tee, consisting of Mrs. W. A. Thorne, chairman, Mrs. T. J. Al ford, Mrs. C. N. Wheeler, Mrs. C. W. Davis, Mrs. R. L. Towe. rhe next meeting for the club will be held on the fourth Monday in February, it was announced, the place to be selected later. After the reports were given, Mrs. Clayton Gurley, field worker for Associated Charities, spoke to the members of the department and suggested some ideas that might aid the work of the depart ment. She suggested milk, clothes, Christmas boxes, pension cases, Big Sister idea, personal advice, and help in informing the public as to the conditions existing. Davis will fill his first appointment at Calvary Sunday morning at eleven o’clock. A large attendance is ex pected. Miss Evelyn Mitchell spent the week-end in Richmond, Va. Mrs. J. T. D. Rawlings, Miss Janet Rawlings, Mrs. H. M. Brow der and Miss Marian Browder vis ited in Rocky Mount Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. R. P. Allen spent the week-end in Raleigh, N. C. Mrs. R. W. Carter spent the week end in Wake Forest and attended the Fritz Kreisler concert in Ra leigh Friday. Mrs. Pat Larkin has returned home after spending two weeks in Rocky Mount, N. C. Boy Finds Tarzan Hard To Imitate; Wakes In Hospital Playing Tarzan on the Roanoke River did not work out so well for Henry Lyles. Henry and a companion were down by the river last Saturday afternoon, having just finished a chicken dinner that they had pre pared, it is reported. After the meal Henry wagered his companion that he could climb one tree and jump to another, Tarzan style. After the stakes were placed, Hen ry climbed the tree and jumped. So far so good, but from there on, not so good. In making the Tarzan leap, Henry failed to cpn tact the adjoining tree and fell a bout 14 feet to the ground, render ing himself unconscious for about 30 minutes. An ambulance from the Williams Funeral Home was called to the scene and the injured boy was rushed to the hospital. The at tending physician found the boy suffered no broken bones, but was kept in the hospital for a few days to determine whether he suffered any internal injuries. His condition is reported favor able. Mr. and Mrs. B. D. Johnson, Bil lie Edmonds of Greenville were the Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Edmonds. Mr. and Mrs. R. O. Carpenter and family, W. J. The Roanoke Rapids Woman's Club will meet Monday afternoon, December 4th. A special feature of the program will be a dramatic reading by Mrs. Ruth Vick Ever ett, Chairman of the Fine Arts De partments of North Carolina Wo men’s Clubs. Because Mrs. Everett has been heard on former occa sions in Roanoke Rapids with so much enjoyment her appearance is anticipated with pleasure. Hostesses for the afternoon will be Mesdames B. E. Stephenson, Zeb Denny, A. O. George, George Pappendick, T. M. Jenkins, J. F. May and L. S. Neal.
