LEGGETT'S (Continued from Page 1) The present store, as well as the new second floor, will be equipped with all new fixtures of the very latest and most modern type in present day use by department stores. The store will be equipped with fluorescent lighting through out including show-windows. Sev eral new departments will be add ed, and when the program is com pleted Leggett’s will be one of the largest department stores in East ern Carolina. The second floor addition will be made at the rear of the building, and will comprise the full 100-ft. width of the store, extending some 40-ft. from the rear of the build ing, thus giving the store a gain of 4,000-square-feet of floor space. The building now occupied by Leg gett’s fronts 100-ft. on Roanoke Avenue and extends the full 140 ft. to the alley. Whereas the store now occupies 14,000-square ft. of floor space when the expansion program is completed they will oc cupy 18,000-square-ft. The second floor addition will be used largely to house the ready-to wear and millinery departments, while the space now used on the downstairs floor by these depart ments will be given over to a ma terial enlargement of the yard goods department and several new highly specialized departments will t>e aaaea. Leggett’s Department Store was established here August 1st, 1931, and their record is one of con tinuous growth and progress under the efficient management of H. S Loy. The original Leggett’s Roa noke Rapids store was in the build ing they now occupy with a 100-ft front on Roanoke Avenue, tho il extended back only 100-ft. In th< Pall of 1936 the building was ex tended the full 140-ft. to the alley increasing their floor space by al most 50-percent. With the com pletion of their present expansioi program they will have practical!; doubled the floor space originally j occupied by them. “We are making this expansion in order that our store may be of more service and convenience to the shopping public—not simply for the name and greatness of operat ing a big store,” H. S. Loy, secre tary and local manager, said today in commenting on the expansion. “When we first introduced the name of Leggett’s to the shopping public here some ten-years ago we little dreamed we would be enabled to offer the fine store which we will operate when this expansion program is completed,” he con tinued, “but nevertheless it has happened. The past decade has seen the city of Roanoke Rapids make tremendous gains as a shop ping center for a great and pros perous territory. We are grateful to our customers who have made it possible for us to go forward with the community.” Leggett’s Department Store is a member of the Belk Organization, operating some 200 department stores in five southern states, with buying offices in New York City and Charlotte. Thirty salespeople are regularly employed by Leg gett’s here with this number swell ed materially over the weekend and during rush seasons. With the completion of the expansion pro gram Leggett’s will have 40 or more regular employees. The building occupied by Leg gett's is owned by Dr. Bahnson Weathers and J. E. McGee. Pete Garner, local builder, has the con tract for building the second floor addition. Kermit Young, architect employed by the Belk Organiza tion, drew up the plans. Comple tion of the building is expected by June 1st. Joe Skull spent the week-end with his mother in Rich Square. Sergeant Curtis Butler of Fort Jackson, Columbia, S. C., spent Easter holidays with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. W. Butler. Julian Glover of Norfolk, Va. l spent the Easter holidays here ' with his family. LIFTING CAR FROM CANAL BANK — Above photo shows the car that was driven to the edge of the old canal bank from the "Dam Site" road about four miles above city last Tuesday morning. In the center of the picture and above the machine can be seen the Roanoke River. Had the car gone ten feet farther it would have plunged off the old canal bank to the bed of the canal about 75 feet below. The machine was driven by Walter Howell, young white man of Belmont.
