®The 149th anniversary of the na tion’s independence was celebrated with a demonstration of prepared ness, marked by the mobilization of more than a million men, comprised of the regular army, national guard, organized A reserves and Sfte-day volunteers who paraded in various cities of the United States. ★ ★ ★ Fourth of July fatalities exceeded 256 over the nation, with auto accidents heading the list. Three children were killed by fire-crackers in New York City. « « « Counterfeit doctors’ prescriptions were aiding many in obtaining their liquor supply during these “prohi fl^ion” days. More than a million bogus prescriptions were passed in a few months in New York City alone, according to a report by the prohibition director. ★ ★ ★ William Jennings Bryan, three times Presidential nominee of the Democratic party and Secretary of State under President Wilson, died at the age of 65. The Golden Text was from Hebrews 12: 12, 13. “Lift up the bands which hang down, and the feeble knees; and make straight paflU for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the w.ay; but let it rather be healed.” Among the citations which com prised the Lesson-Sermon were the following from the Ejble: "Arise, shine; for thy light is come and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. For, behold, the dark ness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people; but the Lord shall rise upon thee, and hijj^glory shall be seen upon thee. And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the bright ness of thy rising” Isaiah 60: 1-3). The Lesson-Sermon also included the following passages from the Christian Science textbook, “Sci ence and Health with Key to the Scriptures” by Mary Baker Eddy: "Ask yourself: Am I living the life that approaches .the supreme good? Am I demonstrating the hetjj'ng power of Truth and Love? If so, then the way will grow brighter "unto the perfect day.” Your fruits will prove what the understanding of God brings to man.
