MORE MEN GO INTO SERVICE The following men from this dis trict have been inducted into the army: James Henderson Lyerly, Jr., Woodrow Wilson Wrenn, William Redin Matthews, Eugene Nichols Long, Floyd Wilson Royal, Wood row Wilson Daniels, Robert Lee Revelle, James Frederick Porter, Jr., Lionel Cecil Evans, Dewey Ellsworth Waters, Calvin Payne Taylor, Alvin Edward Stansbury, Hollis G. Pulliam, Thomas Lester Gray, William Selby Lowe, Donald Lee Moseley, Roscoe Landon Daniel. Edward Francis Gums and Charlie Edgar Massey have been in ducted into the Navy. Chester Simms At Camp Butner Army Ground and Service Forces Redistribution Station, Camp But ner, N. C.—Sgt. Chester D. Simms, son of Mr. and Mrs. Luther Simms of 919 Henry St., Roanoke Rapids, N. C., and husband of Mrs. Chester Simms, of the same address, is cur rently stationed at the Redistribu tion Station, where he will spend two weeks before reporting to his new assignment in the United States. Sergeant Simms was returned re cently to the United States after having served eight months in the European theatre of operations, where he served as a squad leader in the infantry. He holds the Pur ple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, European theatre ribbon with two bronze campaign stars. During his period of service over seas, the Tar Heel veteran was in some of the toughest fighting in France. St Lo, Carten, and Vire Mortain were merely three of the places seared in his memory. Woodrow Bryant Does Good Job William Woodrbw Bryant, SF3/C, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. F. Bryant, Star Route, and husband of Mrs. Virginia J. Bryant, 211 Madison Street, is among the men engaged in the important, strategic work of the Navy’s most vital role in the Pacific War — the defense of the sea approaches to the far-flung bases throughout this vast ocean from the Bering Sea to the South west Pacific. Part of this defense network is that done silently and without public acclaim by the of ficers and men of the Naval service who build and tend net defenses for advanced harbors. Huge fleet anchorages have been secured by the net service in com bat zones throughout the Pacific, sometimes While fighting was still going on on the islands concerned. The work is hard. The hours are long. The weather is a rugged task master. Tropical typhoons and Aleu tian willi-was are rough on the net people whose hard toil must go on in order to make harbors safe for the vast Fleet of the Pacific Commander-in-Chief, Fleet Admiral C. Storm Damages Rogers' Home During the severe storm of last Thursday, the home of Ernest Rogers, Route 2, Halifax, war struck by lightning. Weather boards were ripped off and splin tered and hurled some distance. A tree about 100 feet from the house was struck at the same time. Ho one was hurt Preachers Here Mrs. H. J. Give Bridge Party On Friday Evening On Friday evening of last week Mrs. W. S. Dean and Mrs. Graham Dean were hostesses with bridge at their home on Jackson street. Ef fective for decorations, bowls of summer flowers were used. Attrac tive tallies designated places for playing. After several progressions the scores were collected and a prize given for high and second score, Mrs. Carrol] Wilson winning first prize and Mrs. F. J. Hawley, second. A salad course was served at ten thirty. This delightful party was enjoyed by the following play ers: Mesdames Lyle Wilson, F. J. Hawley, Howard Pruden, T. J. Al ford, Carroll Wilson, Frank Wil liams, Joe Bryant, Pendleton Griz zard, George Hayes, Jr., Fannie Hayes, D. E. Bennett and Miss Mar jorie Cannon. State High In Enlistments Lt. Louis P. McCormick, Recurit ing and Induction Officer for the United States Army Recruiting Station, Depositor’s National Bank Building, Durham, N. C., announced today that the State of North Caro lina placed third in the Fourth Service Command during the montfc of June in the number of enlist ments for the Women’s Army Corps. The two North Carolina recruiting stations, located at Charlotte and Durham, enlisted a total of eleven women from the state during June. All enlistments at the present time are for General Assignment only and all enlistees take their basic training at the First WAC Training Center, Fort Des Moines, Iowa. The following women were enlist ed through the Durham station: Pvt. Peggy Lee Gordon, 303 N. Davie St., Greensboro, N ,C.; Mild red Ann Ling, Route No. 3, High Point, N. C.; Pvt. Esther E. Nelson, Vaughan, N. C.; Pvt. Violet K. Caudle, 507 Church St., Burlington, N. C. Pvt. Caudle reported for active duty on July 4, and the others will report later this month. DEATHS JIMMIE GREENE TAYLOR Jimmie Greene Taylor, 64, of this city, died at his home Sunday _A_ morning, July 1, at 1 o’clock, after a lingering illness. Funeral services were held at Galatia Baptist Church, at 4 o’clock Wednesday afternoon, by the Rev. Lonnie Sasser, pastor of the church, assisted by the Rev. Gordon L. Price, pastor of the First Baptist Church. Interment was in the Gala I tia Church cemetery. ; Mr. Taylor was the son of John nie Mariah and the late D. W. Taylor of Northampton County. He has been a life-long resident of NorthampfSn County until about seven months ago, when he moved to Roanoke Rapids .Mr. Taylor was a member of the Galatia Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife; one dau ghter, Mrs. Eugene Hudson of Roa noke Rapids; two sons, Carl any Roy; his mother, Mrs. Johnnie Taylor and one brother Romie of Seaboard. Two grandchildren, Peg gy of Roanoke Rapids, and R. D., serving with the army in France.
