FINE CAST IN DOWNTOWN MOVIE, "OUT OF THIS WORLD" i_ Mnday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at the Peoples: Once mere Paramount scores solidly with a picture starring Eddie Bracken in “Out of This World. For sheer unadulterated fun this musical comedy rates plenty of attention, relating a deliciously humorous story with all the trim mings. Ingenuity and imagination have been employed in a highly divert i;g| take-off on the bobby-sock wmship of the swooner-crooners of the Frank Sinatra school. And Bracken applies all his comedic talents to make the gags come off resoundingly. The comedian is in hij finest form and is ably abet ted bv Veronica Lake, Diana Lynn {and Cass Daley in malting uut of This World” a grand dish of entertainment for everyone, every where. | jBracken is a telegraph mes senger who suddenly finds himself catapulted to fame as a crooner. So many persons have a financial interest in him that things get pretty badly gummed up. Largely responsible for his plight is Miss Lynn, leader of a girl-band anxious to get into radio. Everything is straightened out satisfactorily, in cluding a romance between Brack en. and Miss Lynn. ^he use of Bing Crosby’s voice in Bracken’s singing sequences adds immensely to the merriment. It is a smart twist that audiences will appreciate no end. Thursday, Friday and Saturday: A timely story which takes an ef fective jab at those who are not above capitalizing on a war hero, 2 ever, a dead one, and at the same time offers a little lesson in Am eManiem, makes "A Medal for • Benny” deserving of lots of screen time. Effectively played by a cast headed by Dorothy Lamour, Arturo De Cordova, J. Carrol Naish, Mik hail Masumny, Rosita Moreno and others, it is alternately amusing, charming and moving. Miss Lamour, playing it straight and in simple, not too attractive, full length dresses, delivers a swell Mrformance as the belle of Msano settlement in a small Cali fornia coastal city, a settlement of happy-go-lucky descendants of the original Spanish settlers and In dians Betrothed to Benny Martin who, having been run out of town for indulging in his favorite past time, beating up police sclua“s Miss Lamour is being pursued ard ently by De Cordova. She remains steadfast until De Cordova con fronts her with the proof of Ben d’s faithlessness, in the person of Rosita Moreno. Comes word uai died a hero’s death in the Philip pines, and has been awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor posthumously. The city fathers de cide to cash in on the publicity at tendant upon the presentation of the medal to Naish, as the father of Benny, who has become Ameri fa’s “Number 1 Hero." They find jaish about to be evicted from is hovel in the Paisano settle ment for non-payment of rent. They move him into an attractive home—for the period of the cere monies, fearing that pictures of the hovel would do the city no good when they were circulated around the country. The attendant publicity dramatizes Miss Lamour as Benny s oereavea swenuciu v, lending complications to her un dfeclared love for De Cordova V Naish learns that through him self, his son’s heroism is being ex ploited by the city’s promoters. He moves back to his hovel and ignores the ceremonies of the medal presentation, which brings the governor, the general and the honor squadron to the Paisano hovel, where his hero son was born and grew up. De Cordova joins the Army and his and Miss JLamour’s betrothal is not to M ^announced until his return. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Moseley and children, Buddy and Linda Carol, spent several days last week in Broadnax, Va., with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Mose ley. t ife: :''S v -■ J..*: ■ PROGRAM FOR NEXT WEEK AT THE IMPERIAL Sunday at the Imperial will be “I Love A Soldier,” a return pic ture starring Paulette Goddard and Sonny Tufts. Monday and Tuesday: “Pillow to Post” with Ida Lupino and Wil liam Prince, supported by Sydney Greenstreet, Stuart Erwin, and still others is a breathless comedy that will provide plenty of fun. The picture is another finding its inspiration in the housing shortage. The one in need of quarters this time is Ida Lupino, who is trying to sell oilwell equip ment for her pop to help solve the manpower shortage. To get accom modations near a camp she has to pose as an Army wife. She in veigles William Prince, an officer, lu piety at matrimony to sustain the duplicity. The complications are countless and quite amusing for the most part. A good deal of the fun stems from Prince’s efforts to keep Sydney Greenstreet, his superior officer, Jrom finding out the truth. As per expectations, the girl and the lad wind up loving each other and altar-bound. Wednesday: "Jungle Captive” is the name of the movie and Ot to Kruger and Amelita Ward play the leading roles. This is another one of Univer sal’s variations on the Franken stein theme of bringing a person to life to the accompaniment of gurgling test tubes and flashing lights. This time the monster is a woman. Paula, the Ape Woman. But a woman with a beard and a low forehead, as it is excitingly demonstrated in this film can be just as deadly as any other mon ster with screws in its neck. This film easily merits its “hor ror” classification for, despite the zeimneantisruiiidcmiwyp mmmmm use of all the familiar ingredients there is a pace and tenseness to "Jungle Captive” that will hold an audience’s attention. The story has to do with that familiar mad doctor who is ob sessed with restoring rabbits, mon keys and humans to life. This time the doctor kidnaps his woman as sistant and pumps her blood into the body of the Ape Woman which he had stolen from a morgue. The doctor is murdered by the Ape Woman and the assistant is rescu ed by the other half of the roman tice-interest team. There’s little of plot novelty in this film, but the old plot is still good for thrills as acted by Otto Kruger, Rondo Hatton and a pack of vicious dogs. Thursday and Friday: Johnney Weismuller and Brenda Joyce will play in a movie packed with act ioon and thrills, “Tarzan and the Amazons.” Tarzan and his son are eagerly awaiting the return of the jungle lord’s wife, Jane, from England. As the apeman heads downstream to meet his wife, he pauses to rescue an Amazon from the clutch es of a black panther, returning the girl to her home beyond the mountains. Tarzan’s wife arrives accompanied by a group of scient ists who desire to obtain informa tion concerning the Amazons, which is refused by Tarzan. The apeman’s son, however, leads the part yto the lost city of the Ama zons where the party repays good treatment with rifle and looting. The warlike women, although their losses are heavy, kill all but two of the visitors and capture Tar zan’s son, who is doomed to die. Tarzan arrives in the nick o’time, for the rescue, after killing the two scientists who had escaped, ana returning the stolen loot. The jungle scenes, with lions, leopards, monkeys and elephant#, are highly realistic, and the ex cellent photography of the lost city of the Amazons makes an incredibly beautiful picture. Jdhnny Weissmuller in this one has much more ease as Tarzan, making him a powerful and thoroughly sympa thetic character. while Johnny Sheffield, as Tarzan’s son. is also entirely credible. Brenda Joyce is Jane, wife of Tarzan, and she plays the part with simplicity and grace. Saturday: Jimmy Kakely and Lee White will play in "Spring time in Texas.” \ OTTIS J.
