Eastern Star Holds Special Meeting To Receive Charter A tumera onapter no. 119, Order of *the Eastern Star of Roanoke Rap ids, held a special meeting on July 11 to receive its charter and elect and install officers for the year. Mrs. John Lackey and daughter, Joanne, are visiting at her home in Henderson, Ky. Mrs. W. T. Price has returned from her vacation at Virginia Beach. Mrs. Mary Burton has returned worn Virginia Beach and Wrights ville. Cpl. John Simmons, of St. Pet ersburg, Fla., is home on furlough. Lt. Paul, Overton left Saturday after spending a leave with rela tives here. , IT. J. .Alford is vacationing at Fort Landing this week. L the Chapter dining room. The meeting re-convened at 8 P. M. and Installation of newly elected officers took place. Mrs. Twiford, worthy grand matron, appointed the following grand officers to assist in the in stallation ceremony. These had previously assisted in the consti tuting ceremony during the after noon. session: Grand Marshal, Mrs. Hattie M, Perkins; Grand Chap lain, Dr. J. Howard Brown; Grand Warder, Mrs. Mable Martin; Grand Sentinel, Mr. Wilbur D. Perkins; Grand Organist, Mrs. Marese Conyers; Grand Secretary, Mrs. Bessie Ruck Mangum; Grand Conductress, Mrs. Mary Hollo well; Associate Grand Conductress, Mrs. Vera Draper; Associate Grand Matron, Mrs. Ardell Ingle sen. The Chapter presented gifts to the worthy grand matron, Mrs. Blanche C. Twiford; the district deputy grand matron, Mrs. Hattie M. Perkins; the district deputy grand patron, Dr. J. Howard Brown, the past matron, Mrs. Alice H. Miller, and past patron, H. Will Nelson. At the close of the meeting sandwiches and soft drinks were served and a short social period enjoyed. 1 DEATHS 1 Pfc. Fred Hall Dies of Wounds Mrs. C. F. Young, of Jefferson street, and B. L. Hall, of Monroe street were notified recently of the death of their nephew, Pfc. Fred Hall, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Hall, of Broadnax. Va., who died of wounds received in Ger many, June 23. BARNIE FRAZIER JENKINS Barnie Frazier Jenkins, age 38, died at his residence in Ridgeway at 5:50 P. M., Monday, after an illness of three months. Son of Mr. W. S., and Mosha Harris Jenkins,* of Weldon, he was a member of the Weldon Baptist Church and held a position with the State Highway Department for the past 14 years. Funeral services were conducted from the Weldon Bap tist Church at 4 o’clock, Wednes day with the pastor, Rev. Finlator, assisted by Rev. J. D. Stott of the Halifax Methodist church, officiat ing. Interment was in the Weldon Cemetery. Surviving are his wife, the former Lilly Irene Garner; 3 children, Misses Mildred and Haz el Jenkins and William Albert Jenkins, of Ridgeway; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Jenkins, Roa noke Rapids; 3 brothers, Charlie of Weldon. Roger of Roanoke Rap ids, Lloyd of N. S. A.-E. L. O.; 3 sisters, Mrs. Irene Sledge of Greensboro, Mrs. Leonard Allen and Miss Helen Jenkins of Roa noke Rapids. JOHN L. WRIGHT John L. Wright, 83, of Littleton, died in the Roanoke Rapids Hos pital Wednesday morning at 11:45 following a short illness. Funeral services will be held Friday after noon at 3 o’clock at the home. In terment will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery. Surviving are four daughters: Mrs. Viola Reid of Alexandria, Va.; Mrs. S. B. Bobbitt, of Littleton; Mrs. J. H. Bobbitt, of Norfolk, Va., and Mrs. J. T. Reid, of Littleton; three sons, R. E., R. D., and Eu gene Wright, all of Washington, D. C. INFANT SON Mr. and Mrs. Furman Myrick announce the birth and death of a son last Monday in Roanoke Rapids Hospital. Morris Resigns From Department J. C. Morris, named to the city police force on May 15 to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Officer Clayton Matthews, has tendered his resignation effective July 15, it was announced today.
