For when it comes to a matter of bread and butter, even the Indian must abandon his old relations, and be willing to put himself in the way of new things and new ideas. The Navaho is an excellent artisan, and certainly there is at least that avenue of developement open to him, provided he can become a reliable and intelligent workman. From my observation, I am of the opinion that he has qualities that will make him the very best of work men. When an Indian's ability to be individually self-supporting has been established, the question of his ultimate developement along high er lines should follow by natural sequence, given the opportunities for it, and the groundwork of char actor that knows how to improve them. After all, the solution of the Navaho's future lies entirely in the education of his character, and to this end all the appliances of educa tion will not avail as much as hit contact with the best type of our men and women who are willing to go to him and devote themselves to his growth and enlargement.
