classes during the coming year. Literary items from the school
rooms "were sent to the "Light" this year. The children have taken
great delight in this work and it has proven to be an important ad
dition to our Academic work. Our school demonstrating garden
has been better this year than ever, the children taking great interest
in both the instruction received and the practical cultivation of their
garden. We have now to look to the closing school year with
pleasant experiences, recollections, and profits to each one of us at
the same time looking to the coming school year with a desire to up
hold the dignity of and to make the Oglala Boarding School a
positive agency for character building and rational living among the
Oglala Sioux.
MUSIC
Some one has said Its the songs ye sing, and the smiles ye wear,
that's a making the sun shine everywhere." It is generally agreed
that all students of child life and development have long classed
music among the most important studies as a means of reaching and
stimulating natures to which other studies do not appeal. As a
softening and refining influence in schools of this kind its value can
not be overestimated. Instruction is given to girls, who are music
ally inclined, on piano. All boys and girls are given an opportunity
for singing practice daily. The band numbers thirty pieces. Each
boy is given an instrument and started out on easy exercises, to
gether with a short study of the fundamentals of music such as
notation, etc. The band boys get daily rehearsals besides individual
practice. Part of the work is given to solo and quartette work and
orchestra also, which increases the students self-reliance. The
main object of the work is to teach the students to read readily and
to appreciate good music.
PRINTING
Printing in the broadest sense of the word, refers to everything
that is being done with in the walls of the printing department.
A well equipped printing office offers an opportunity to learn a
valuable trade. The boy who takes up this work begins with learn
ing the cases. Following this, e takes u the point system,
