The Northwestern •UBCISHED EVERY FRIDAY AT THK COUNTY BEAT. TERMS:—*1.00 PICK TEAR. IT PAIT> IN ADVANC1 Entered at the Loup Cltv Postofllce for trank mission through the mails as second class matter* .1. W. BURLEIGH, Ed. and Pub. II. S. FRENCH, City Editor. CALL FOR REPUBLICAN COI N TV CENTRAL COMMITTEE. To the Republican Voters: Gentlemen: There w ill l>e a meeting of the Sherman County Republican Cen tral Committee at Loup City, on March sth, at 1 p. m., for the purpose of mak ing the necessary arrangements for call ing the county convention, and any person wishing to be beard will be given an opportunity to speak. Yours for harmony, II. Smelseh, Chairman. The state capitnl of Wisconsin was destroyed by tire last Saturday, with the loss placed at one million dollars. The Russo-Japanese war seems to be one of desultory skirmishes on both sides, and it is impossible to give any definite information, as both countries have press censorship and give out no very good accounts of progress. Iowa is to have biennial elections hereafter A bill to that effect has passed both branches of the Iowa legislature by c unfortable majori ties and has the unqualified sanction of the voters at large. A good idea for Nebraska to follow. Attorney G- neral I’routis another man who thinks he wants to be Un ited States senator in place of Sen ator Dietrich. Just why Mr Prout might imagine he was. wanted in ,< _ < that responsible position is incom prehensible. But the more the mer rier. State Senator O’Neill of Lancaster is pushed by his friends for state auditor. Senatoi O'Nejll has mgny good qualifications for the place and no doubt would fill the bill O K , if he should be the fortunate man. By the way, this is an unsolicited comment. ' Omaha complains of a Hood of counterfoil #10 silver certificate# in that vicinity and throughout eastern Nebraska. We have not heard any complaints from newspapers as yet over the receipt of any great num ber of these spurious notes. Alphabet McKesson of Lancaster ‘V - . , county is said to be a coming can didate for secretary of state. We do not believe there is any serious demand for the services of this un genial political manipulator among the rank and file of the voters. Congressman Burkett was report: ed quite ill, last Friday, by dispatch 4 - os from Washington. Should Bui kctt by any untoward circumstance be eliminated from the race for United Sta es senator, either by death or otherwise, what complica tions might ensue. Good-bye to fusion. At a joint meeting of committees of middle-of the-road and fusion populists at St. Louis, last week, they settled their differences, joined hands, bid fare well to fusion with any otlur party, and will go it alone in the future. They issued a call for a joint conven tion to meet at Springfield, 111., on July 4th next, to nominate populist candidates for president and vice president. As our worthy contem porary, the Times-Independent, has been badly exorcised of late as to what had become of the populist organization, we are glad to be able to relieve Ins mind and state the above, which givshis political head a pad to rest upon. i*" -v ’ Congressional Convention. The congressional committee of the Big Sixth met at Grand Island, on the lflth inst., and selected Alli ance as the place and March 17th as the date for holding the coming Sixth congressional convention. This does not give sufficient time in which to call county conventions to select delegations to the congres sional convention, ami in our opin ion is a mistake, in which conclusion we are joined by many of our lead ing Sherman county Republicans. As one prominent Sherman county Republican remarked upon hearing time and date: “We should hesitate to accept the nomination under such cireumstancs.” However, the following extract from a letter addressed to Chairman Smelser, of the Sherman county Re publican central committee by John Reese, secretary of the congression al committee, may explain the mat ter, and make the early convention call satisfactory. Here is the ex tract : “This action was taken in accord ance with the desire that the Sixth district shall be early in the Held with an emphatic endorsement of President Koosevelt. While the time allowed for calling a county convention and electing delegates in the usual manner is short, the mat ter was fully discussed by the com miitee a'd it was decided by the majority that these details could be arranged satisfactorily by the 'sev eral counties. In this connection we suggest that delegates may be chosen by the county central com mittee, if desired, thus obviating the necessity of holding the county convention at a date that may seem too early—especially where it is the intention to nominate local candi dates. Delegates .chosen in this manner will be admitted to the con vention upon credentials signed by • he chairman and secretary of the county central committee.” (We see }>y qqwspaper comment that Editor ('lark Perkins of the St. Paul Republican is a candidate for delegate to the Republican National convention. That’s all right. He’s t 4 » a a bright young newspaper man and publishes a live Republican paper, which is always an important factor to party success, so let us give him right-of-way to the convention. Car ried. Baptist Church Notes We think that the first thing for us to Uo at this time is to make an apology : to ttio good people who came to our d urch last Sunday. Those who read ihe notes last week will remember that we promised that they would not be discommoded by the paint again but owing to the bad weather and other un avoidable circumstances, the painting was not finished as soon in the week as we > xpected and it was not as pleasant sitting in the church as we had hoped. When the painting is completed we will have a tine looking church both in side and out. We are glad to see our house of worship made attractive and pleasant and as we re-d«*dicaie our church building to God, cleansed and made beautiful, let us also re dedicate ourselves to Him with a renewed de termination to do more and lietter work. The 1$. Y. P. U. opened promptly and was led by Sister Douglass. The sub ject was, ' Missions, Home and For eign," Several interesting talks and readings were given.
