Congress adjourned sine die on Mon day of this week, among its last acts being the passage of the ship subsidy biil and the child labor law. Whether Thaw be found insane or (>e electrocuted, the fact remains that it is a pity White did not do the same kindly act for the public in wiping out the Thaw blemish. According to our way of thinking. Gov. Sheldon shows either a decided weakness in refusing to sign the 2 cent passenger rate, or a head swelled into undue proportions, making him think he is bigger than the legislative bodies which passed the bill nearly unanimously. You may grasp either horn of the dilemma you please. I lie Burlington road lias announced ; acceptance of the 2-cent passenger j rate and has made arrangements to i put the law* into effect today. So our j people will undoubtedly be able to ride on the covered "keers" at one tliird less monetary consideration; from now on. It is claimed the Union j Pacific is busy making out its rate | card to the same effect. The C. & ! X. W. is non-eommital so far. Is it possible that the people of "his ! section have no recourse against the i Union Pacific for the miserable mail j service given us of late? Since that i company put on the baby cart be tween St. Paul and Loup City and changed the time of its mixed train from 12 o’clock noon till 3 o'clock in the afternoon, it scarcely ever brings in the mail till between 5 and ti in the evening, and sometimes not till late in the night. A monster petition to the postal authorities at Washington, which would be eagerly signed by every patron of Uncle Sam hereabouts, should be circulated and sent in iis a very visible remonstrance against such service. An ox team carrier service 1 lietw een St. Paul and Loup City would l>e an improvement. We have received No. 1 of Yol. 1 of the llemingford (Neb.) Journal just started by Clias. H. Burleigh, oliest brother of the editor of this paper. It starts out a 6-col. quarto, brim full of news and also with a goodly num-! tier of columns of advertising from • the business men of that town. Our big brother is an old-time printer and newspaper writer and the Heming forders will get a No. 1 newspaper in all that the word implies, if they give him the support a paperdeserves. and Iro n the first number we should judge he will have a hearty, royal support. There are three Burleigh boys in the family and now all are publishing newspapers, the youngest. W. E. Bur le!ph. at the head of the Tingley. Ia.( Vindicator^^^^^^^^^^ Governor Hashes on Child Labor Governor Hughes, of New York State, is in favor of child labor re form. says the National Child Labor Committee in its official department in the Woman’s Home Companion for March. The governor's emphatic st^ind as outlined in his message will te of great assistance in the contest hrith those who are ever seeking to wes.ken the child labor laws of that state, es pecially where he says: "The children under sixteen should have an eight-hour day; such a pro vision will not only furnish proctee tion. but will also aid the adminis trative officers in their enforcement of the law. I also recommend that l in order to protect children against dangerous employment, there shad be ' a more precise prohibition, sprecif ping' the occupation In which children un der sixteen shall not be employed, i General prohibitions as to liuch matters are apt to be found inopera tive.” Press t’ommeuf on IT. P.isni. Strange as it may seem, the Times-Independ ent or this city is the only country paper that comes to our exchange desk that has an adver tisement of the Union Pacific. By a strange coincident the editor of that paper is the only newspaper man in either house of the legis iature.—Loup Cit v Northwestern. It is a fact that the Union Pacific j has up to this time made no adver- j tising contracts with the news-1 papers of Nebraska, the only exeep- j tions being that above stated and with the Columbus Telegram, an other democratic paper. (Judge?) Howard of the Telegram is a personal friend of the man in charge of the Union Pacific advertising, which ac counts .for that contract, but the same reason cannot apply to the con-. tract with the Tiraes-lndependent. It must be admitted, therefore, that this contract was made only because Brown of the Time.—Independent is. in a position where lie may do the railroads some good. It is well enough that there are no more democratic editors in the legislature.—Ord Quiz. This little item from the Loup City Northwestern gives an idea as to what method may lie employed by the rail road companies in getting around the pass matter to give favors to editors whose good will they desire to have: "Strange as it may seem, the Times- j Independent (pop) of this city is the only country paper that comes to our exchange desk that has an advertise- j ment of the Union Pacific. By a I strange coincidence the editor of that paper is the only newspaper man in either house of the legislature." The Union Pacific is not exchanging money I for country newspaper advertising in i Nebraska. Why the Times-Independ ent. whose editor is in the legislature, j should be favored with an advertising j arrangement of some kind is a question which develops several interesting phases.—Aurora Republican. Only one Nebraska newspaper, so far as known, has succeeded in mak ing an advertising contract with the Union Pacific railroad since the cash ; basis was adopted Jan. 1st—the Loup City Times-Iridependent(fusion) whose editor happens to be a member of the legislature. By a peculiar coincidence. Brother Brown occasionally finds it convenient to ride from his home to Lincoln by way of St. Paul and Grand Island Instead of following the more direct Burlington route.—St. Paul Republican. Trie l nion Pacific seems to have a bad case of sulks. So far as we have been able to learn they have not made a single contract with a country paper' foradvertising.—St. Paul Phonograph Press. As will be noticed by the above ex cerpts from our exchanges, the action of the U. P. road in making a con tract with the Times, whose editor happens to be a member of the legis lature. lays it open to just criticism. What effect the big road thought its action would have over Bro. Brown, and what effect it bad in fact is shown by the record of our representative who voted for the 2-cent passenger rate and is out in favor of all reforms asked for in railroad legislation. We don't blame Bro. Brown for accepting a newspaper contract with the road, but with the brethern of the press cannot help viewing the action of the road in a certain light.
