ENCOURAGE THE SCHOOLS.
Another season of instruction
for the youth of the community is
before us. Let us meet it as be
comes an enlightened people who
seek to give their offspring an
education which will enable them
to successfully cope with the many
obstacles that will beset their path
way through life.
“But that is up to the teachers,
what can we do?” you say.
We may perform our own duty
in the premises by extending to
the instructors our loyal support
and encouragement, both by act
and word. We may impress upon
our children the necessity and im
portance of absolute obedience to
the will of the teacher.
We may instill into their young
minds ihe knowledge that unless
they improve their educational ad
vantages and opportunities of to
day, the commercial advantages of
tomorrow will pass them by.
This is a day of education, and
the man whose mind has received
proper training will be found in
variably in the ascendent, filling
the important positions of life, ac
cumulating the financial compe
tence which their uneducated
brothers seek in vain to the end
of their days. It is vitally neces
sary that our children of today re
ceive every educational advantage
possible to bestow upon them, and
this may only be accomplished to
the fullest extent by working in
harmony with both teacher and
pupil.
Be not hasty in condemning the
teacher for trivial things, but
rather bear in mind that the child
who comes home with complaints
often voices conditions which ex
ist mainly in its too vivid imagina
tion. Remember that the teacher
has reached the age of discretion—
the child has not. The reasoning
capacity of the one has been ex
tended and broadened and de
veloped to a degree, while with
the other it is just beginning to
bud. The future life of the chil
dren of our community will be
smoothed and sweetened by your
loyalty to the teacher today, and
in your own decline of life you
will view with pride the results of
wisdom properly applied.
OUR SCHOOL BONDS SOLD.
We are informed that the $30,
000.00 of bonds voted recently by
School District Number One have
been sold to the state of Nebras
ka at par, plus accrued interest to
date money was remitted to the
district, which we would think a
good sale indeed, especially when
we stop to consider that our
school district can sell its bonds
running for twenty years bearing
only five per cent interest and
optional at that and get par for
them when the great nations of
Great Britain and France are
offering six per cent and may have
to pay more for their loans. This
is one of the advantages of living
in the best country on tiie globe.
We understand that this was the
best offer made, and to enable the
school board to avail themselves
of same, without loss of interest
to the district, while the building
is being constructed the two banks
of Loup City have taken the
money and will pay five per cent
on all of it except a small amount
that will likely be used soon, which
is the same rate the district is
paying to the state. The district
will have the money just as they
need it and be out^ practically
nothing on account of interest.
The school board is certainly to
be congratulated on the splendid
manner in which they have
handled this matter.
By maintaining a blockade,
Great Britain has compiled Ger
many to supply her own needs and
has prevented her from spending
money abroad. Now British states
men are beginning to question the
wisdom of that policy and argue
that it would injure Germany more
if she were permitted to spend
money abroad, thus depleting her
own monetary resources. So far
as the relative interests of Great
Britain and Germany are con
cerned, the discussion is of no con
sequence to us, but it serves to
emphasize the soundness of the
principle of protection. Shutting
out foreign goods and keeping
money at home to pay home labor,
is the fcecret of national prosperity.
A protective wall accomplishes
that end whether the wall be es
tablished by war or by a protec
tive tariff. Any ten year old boy
ought to be able to understand an
economic principle as clear as this.
A SEASONABLE POEM.
The Nebraska Farm Journal
does not believe very strongly in
encouraging the production of ama
teur poetry. One of the tasks that
makes the average editor grow old
before his time is that of explain
ing why he did not print some
would-be poet’s verses,after throw
ing them in the waste basket, with
joui giving the real reason. But
! once or twice a year some reader
, will produce a “pome” that it is a
j pleasure to print because it con
! tains real poetry. This is the rea
son we are publishing the follow
ing verses turned out by J. A.
Dowding of Holbrook, Nebr., one
day while the muse was working:
Tnere's no longer any drouth
In Nebraska;
No hot breezes from the South
In Nebraska;
Not a single sign of blight,
Harvests anything but light.
And the farmers are all right
In Nebraska.
Rains fall nearly every day
In Nebraska;
Want and woe are swept away
In Nebraska:
Moisture’s plenty all about,
Corn is growing big and stout,
And there’s no one moving out—
From Nebraska.
Grass all summer—fresh and green
fn Nebraska;
Crops the finest ever seen
In Nebraska;
Nothing to disturb our ranks,
But the wind producing pranks,
Of the wild and wooly cranks,
In Nebraska.

“The Difference”
By F. J. DeTamble, Charlotte Branch
A poet could take a worthless sheet of paper, write a
poein on it and make it worth thousands of dollars.
THAT’S GENIUS.
Our government can take an ounce and a quarter of
gold and stamp it with an eagle bird and make it worth
twenty dollars. THAT’S MONEY.
A mechanic can take material worth five dollars and
make it into wheels worth a thousand dollars.
THAT’S SKILL.
A merchant can take an article worth fifty cents and
sell it for a dollar. THA T’S BUSINESS.
The Author of this can write a check for ninety thou
sand dollars but it wouldn't be worth a cent.
THA T’S TOUGH.
There are automobile makers in this country who use
four thousand pounds of material to build an automoble
and they will tell you that this automobile will serve
them with pleasure and economy.
THA T’S DECEIT.
Everybody who is posted and wants the most for their
money buys a “FORD."’
THAT’S GOOD JUDGMENT.

Will You Visit The
Exposition This Autum or Winter?
Thousands are going to California to see that marvelous exposi
tion before the gates are closed December 31st. Many will make an
autumn tour at these cheap rates, returning before winter, whil9
many will leave before cold weather for the winter in Southern Cali
fornia, going via San Francisco. The final return limit of Exposition
tickets is December 31, 1915; those spending the winter in California
should travel either on one way tickets, or there is available the first
class nine-months excursion ticket. The Burlington operates daily
through sleepers to San Francis'oo arid Los Angdles via the popular
route through Denver, Scenic Colorado and Salt Lake City.
Consult me if you expect to go this autumn. Let me make vour
through reservations early. Whether you go first to Los Angeles or
to San Francisco, you have Burlington through sleeper service.
■ Burlington through service California routes comprise
a “See America’’ tour that includes the scenic, the highly
