BKAERBBARD TO THE FRONT. Editors (Jopiahan: Forsev •ral issues of your Journal onr town has quietly submit ted to the slurs heaped upon it by tbe Great Tempe ranee champions Bob and Dr. Row an. I have patient!? watch cd and waited to hear from some of our good people a refutation of the slanders hur led against us as a commnni* ty for whiskey drinking, but having waited but in vain I take to task the Honored Gen tlemen and defend the call ing of those whose business is legitimised and who conduct the same under the very laws classed by the Doctor as un lawful. I am an imbiber ot *tr«nw drink. I love it and a night cap is as soothing hi my wearied mind and body as a tew ditqis of opium »••• morphine is to the mind and body ot the persons who love 'intoxicating effects in that form. I have passed the fiery ordeal—havfe seen the venom mis serpents with their ton gues office ready to inflict the pcisinous wound—have telt the effects of a falling wail as of suffocation and have come out unscathed, and still a “Whiskey7 straight” to me has its beneficial effects, and to deprive me ot its results 'vouId he to shorten my days at an early pciiod;and to whom am I responsible ? To the whiskey seller? No—to inv God and him alone, and if I choose that method of eke ing out my7 existence, what is it to Dr. Itowan, Boh, or any body7 else. If I transgress the laws of the land, the aux lo^s marshal is ever ready to serve a warrant and by that j means I generously contrib- \ utc to the town Treasury my mite and also gladden the heart of the poorly paid town marshal thereby causing bap piness to others to reign su preme and that, over man's down fall. In my humble opinion the Temperance movement in this neighborhood is gotten up, solely for the puipose of newspaper notoriety and also to harrass and annoy citizens who have fulliled the law to the letter in the sale of wliis key «fcc. This same move ment was started here sever* at years sfego »-mKft»r of support caved in, as it has done,in all the leading States and Cities of the Union. If the minority do not wish liq nor sold, why do they not pe tition the Congress to stop its manufacture. There is the point to begin at, do not an noy one of your citizens by a foolish harangue which am ounts to no avail. Any tiling manufactured under and by virtue of a license from the Government will be sold and put on sale to the citizens of that Government, no matter what amount of licensa is de manded or penalty attached. This is the spirit of an A liter ican people, and the sale of such obnoxious articles can only be stopped except as ah ovo set forth. The “Prohibition Law” at Wesson is an illustration of the evil effects of whiskey sel ling where the local authori* ty endeavor to suppress.. Dr. Rowan cannot deny or disguise the fact that this community is fully cognizant that certain Brands of Hos tetters, Tolu, Rock and Rye and other Bitters sold as Pat tent medicine are put up sole ly to be sold in such prohibi tory towns as Wesson, and by Professional Judges are pronounced whiskey with a few grains of quinine mixed in to give it the bitter taste, and thereby deceive the au tboritie* and increase the profits of sale about two hun dred per cent. If Dr. Row an’s argument would bold good, I would open a Patent Medicine Store in Beau re gard, and on Sunday alone I would deal out more Patent Medicine Bitters than Mr. John Cason, Mr. Loving, Mi Terrel and Mr. Coen wonld sell during the entire week. But Doctor, we have not a Mayor here who is in the Jlhuj like your Mayor-suject to the beck and call of others. Mr, Frank Thomas (ottr May or) is wide awake to all such triks for he and Mr. Dick Griffin (our Marshal) have taken too many drinks of Hard Cider at Cottons, to be deluded by Toin, Rye and Rock—and as tor Cason or Bill Loving to attempt to sell any whiskey on Sunday on a plea of, sickness that wonld be too thin for our whole tear perauce town would get uiigU j i ■linn ii ir~ i r ty sick or Sunday and hard ly be able to utter a word as Nath Hooker sometimes gets when he says the asthma is working on him. Our drug stores here, at one time, did a smashing business when the local option lawwasin force; and Doctor we would advise you, as Veritas says, obey the law or side with the whis key seller. You must choose one of the two, yon cantVot handle whiskey in a disguise and hurl bombshells at. ail whisker sellers and drinkers. Bitters won’t do Doctor.— Again Doctor, while you blaze away at whiskey and listen to the gronrs and des pair of widows and orphans and attempt to alleviate their suffering and impoverished condition, you on ihe other hand hurry to a more horrid, fearful and demoniac grave, the insatiate morphine and opium enter. Do you ever try to stay the progress of this Deauion. It comes un der, strictly “medicine,” hut is a more sure, swift and des perate messenger of death than whiskey. Ah Doctor, do not go so headstrong— thousands of darts can be hurled at you. Do not enter the privacy of Veritas. It is wrong. Let Ihe past be for gotten. VY rite Veritas up as, of to day, and if yon can,t. get items enough on him, I’ll help you—but good Doctor do not go into his private life. Now as to the communion tion from “Bob” one would naturally infer that he is more in search of fun on a new method than to try to stay tlie hand of the Demon whiskey,—lie Certainly must have concluded that 'all of Beauregard were full of whis key all the time. Ho wants all the young men to join in the temperance army. YYell Bob, some of iho boys may enlist, but you must get the giris along too, or you will never get the boys, and, then a huge part of theiuirill have a mental reservation, for they must all believe like their Daddies. “Do as 1 do" that is “I drink when ever I feel like it,” so I don’t think Hob you can make any “mark” on the Fathers. As for our Ger man townsmen a glas of Lag er is “more Lesser as t/opt" As your appeal Va‘s solely to the fathers, young men and girts, you made a fearful mistake hi not taking in the “mothers,” tor how oft is a mothers heart wrung in hit ler despair at the reckless, w a n t on ex t ravaga nee of a so n. The “mothers” would have been the keystone to your call and under their banner the Temperance cause would have its modifying effects— without them everything falls. Mr. Editor, I fear T have taxed your patience, but I could not quietly submit to the indignities heaped upon our village, more particularly upon our townsmen who deal in whiskey. I wanted to see if any of them would reply— they failing is what prompted me, knowing as wo all do that they annually pay into our town school fund $800 00 which, together with the coun ty fund enables us to run first class schools, patronized far and near, because of the effi cient corps of teachers. 1 do not see for this reason ntiv cause of a Temperance move here where we have such effi cient officers. Promising to be merely a “looker on in Venice” and catch passing shafts hurled from the able pen of Veiitas in defence of law and order—I bid you adieu, Roundabout. Beauregard, May 24th, 1880. “The Great National Remedy” is rapidly being introduced every where. It is a medicine that is bound to become popular as it is a specific for Dots and Colic in horses, and as a liniment it has no equal, because it will cure sprains, bruises, sore throat, rheu matism, neuralgia, muscular af fections, back ache, &c. Editors of The Copiahem: Gentlemen.—I am now sev enty-six years of age, and have been taught from tny infancy to observe strictly the golden rale, “Do onto others as you would have them do unto you,” which rule I have strictly tried to observe, po litically and privately, I have never written any arts cle for public view, that I did not attach my name, J. B Reid,‘nor have I ever made any statement that I did not think correct of others, and hold myself responsible for the same. This is what 1 think right between man and man, and I am willing for any gentleman to speak or write about any of my errors in life, either politically or private, so he subscribes his name to the same, so l can know where to find him and what to say to him in repl\. In sevenl of your last pa pers, Messrs. Editors, my natinc has been drawn into and connected with Ot hers by ficticious writers, such as •John, Paul and others, and fact, misrepresented and things falsely stated bv John in par ticular, which is not right or just, for I cannot consent to answer any writer who is ashamed to sign his true name to his own communi cations to the public; and, furthermore, 1 do not think it any evidence of a gentle man to be using the names of any of his fellow citizens unauthorized under a fictic ions name in this civilized community. A word to the wise is sufficient, and I hope to hear no more from such writers. Yours truly, J. E. Reid. Notice.
