Where the N. E. A Convention and the Department of Indian Education hold their annual meeting July 7-11 1902. The slightly elevated and compara tively level plain upon both sides of the Father of Waters at the Falls of St. Anthony, formed a most natural site for a great city. In 1850 the first house was built upon the west side of the river at the Falls, there at that time a few scatter ing homes upon the east side, the settlement being called St. Anthony. Fouryears later, atown platted upon the east side, and named Minneapolis, a compound of the Indian Minne” Minneapolis in 1857 (water),and the Greek “polis” (city). From this time development was rapid. A MANUFACTURING CITY. As indicated by its location, the city early became a central point for the manufacture and distribution of the products of the prairie and forest. Flour milling and lumber sawing were the first industries established, and in these lines Minneapolis long since became first among the cities of the world; a position which she still maintains. A COMMERCIAL CITY. As the northwest finds in Minne apolis, a market for surplus products, so it looks to the city for its supplies. Thus, it early became a distributing point. The jobbing trade of the city amounts to nearly-$200,000,000 a year, and is steadily growing. , Mr’S ,• , - .. ■'. '■ '■■ MflSH&nk University Armory. PARKS. The park system of the city is ex tensive. It consists of 1,553 acres of park, and 24 miles of charming park drives. The unique anl attractive feature of the park system is found in that chain of parks and parkways, extending from Loring Park near the center of the city, by way of charming intra urban lakes and the beautiful valley of Minnehaha creek, to “Where the Falls of the Minnehaha Laugh and leap into the valley. ’ ’
