The instructions contained in a letter written by Mr, Harding to Thomas W. Miller, alien property custodian, which was made public at the White . House, were wholly unexpected, although the Chemical Foundation numerous times has been under fire of Republican members of congress. ‘ In addition to the instructions that a demand be made for return of the assignments made by the alien property custodian’s office under | phe previous administration, the president ordered Mr. Miller to take any action advised or approved by the attorney general to respect fully the rights or interests of the United States government in the properties. k Supplementary to the president’s | letter a statement was made by At | torney General Daugherty that ac tion taken by Mr. Harding was justi fied by the records of the depart ment of justice, which he said had for many months been conducting an investigation “in the face of much interference,” The attorney general ‘added that the instructions as to re turn to the government of property ‘taken over by the foundation would be carried out “with all dispatch.” e it i The Grand Canyon of the Colorado is in places lined with magnificent imarble. MacDonell, of Wadeross, will be the principal '*e ers at the American Legion rCo ention which convenes in Way-, crosg on July 17, The securing of such able men and widely known orators was a master stroke on the part of the local Le gion Post, With the securing of the speak ers for the convention the program: as outlined some time ago by the committee in charge has been com pleted. A more complete or elabor ate program could not have possibly been arranged. : JUNE BUSINESS IMPROVES - Savannah, Ga., July 3.—June’s business through the port of Savarp ah was most encouraging—more cotton, more naval stores, and more lumber being shipped than in many a previous month. As an example of fhat the midsummer promises, June closed and July started with unusual activity, Three vessels sailed with naval stores on the last day of June for as many widely scattered points; six vessels sailed or cleared last night a\nd today for as many variou® points; loadel ships flying the Amer ican, British, German and Italian flags: For Hamburg, for Barcelona, for Genoa, for Liverpool and other points. This does not include the coastwise traffic. THE CORDELE DISPATCH RUSH FINE MELONS TO NORTH FOR FOURTH JULY Thomasviile, Ga., July 3.—Ship menst of South Georgia watermelons 'have been heavy thiwseek in view rof the demand expected for the ‘Fourth of July trade. Carlot ship ments up to June 28, inclusive, were ‘reported as 4,263, as against 3,680 for last year. Florida shipments were, reported as 9,888 as against 4,867 for last year, showing that the Florida crop has bheen a very large one and has been one of the factors interferring with the sale of the Georgia crop. The chief factor, however, has been the inferior size of the melons this year, ps the demand for the large sizes is good but the supply moderate, The large sizes of 28s and 30s are reported as bringingas high as $4OO and $450 in the New York and Chicago markets but those sizes are very searce, It is said that the men‘ who belonged to the Southwest‘y Georgia Melon Association will come lout much better than the indepen dent shippers and it is probable that all melon growers in this section will join the association another year. The melons shipped by the association are all standardized and so command better sale. FOR JUDGE SUPERIOR COURT | To the Voters of the Cordele Ju dicial Circuit: I hereby announce my candidacy for re-election to the Judgeship of the Cordele Judicial Circuit, subject to the white democratic primary. If ,you again honor me with this great trust I shall in the fature, as I have \in the past, undertake to discharge the duties of the office fairly, impar ially, and fearlessly. 1 will greatly ‘appreciate the support and influence of the voters of the circuit. Very respectfully, 0. T. GOWER. TWOO EARTHQUAKES RECORDFD SUNDAY Washington, July 3,~Tw0 earth: quakes shocks were registered an the scismograph at Georgetown Universi ty today, one this afternoon appar ently being ‘‘local’’ angd possibly in the United States at a distance of 700 or 800 mileg from Washington, The other was felt this morning, but was at a greater distance, The one this afternoon continued from 4:28 to 4:35 o’clock but was not as pro nounced as the one this morning. The first quake, estimated to be 3,800 miles from Washington and deseribed as ‘‘very pronounced’’ on the seigmograph, began at 8:30 a, m. and continued for two hours. FOR JUDGE SUPERIOR COURT To the Voters of The Judicial Cir cuits I announce as a candidate for the Judgeship of the Superior Court lin the approaching primary. It is known that while I, in the termg of my joath, administered justice without respect to persons, and did equal rights to the poor and riech. That I prtected the weak from the unjust oppregsor; the farmer and the busi ness man from the wrecker; peaceful citizens from the habitual eriminal; and showed leniency to the young and unfortunate, without breaking the hecart of faithful wives and lov ing mothers. To this record if Judge again, I will add jone more thing—l will reduce the present expenses of court and thereby materjally lower taxes, Present hard times and the high taxes have cut off many from .the voters list. While for this reason thoy eannot vote, yct I especially ask their influence for a return to a real old fashioned fairness and economy. Yours sincerely, D. A. R .CRUM R !
