The welfare of the nation no less than the well-being of the individual demands that religion nnd education go hand in hand. We call the dead, departed, because through death we de part from one life and pass into another; but the whole time of sojourn on earth, may with great propriety be called death; as we are journeying every day to the grave. We die daily, because every day takes from us a portion of our life. While on earth we are like the waters running to mingle with the sea. Still, how tranquil and serene to a true Christian is the quiet of that autumn evening whose sun is carrying all its glory undimmed below the horizon, while its last rays point heavenward bathing in purple and gold the clouds above." During this month Christians should spend every leisure moment in prayer for those who are expiating their sins in Purgatory Alms, too, should be given to the worthy poor, or charitable deeds per formed; no matter how small the amount or how slight the kindness we are able, respectively to bestow, or perform since we may feel assured that God will apply the merit of the deed to the relief of those in prison, if done with such charitable desire. Who has not father, mother, sister or brother, husband or wife, or mayhap some wayward child, who may be, for aught we know, abiding in the House of Cleansing, hoping, expecting desiring the prayers and alms of those on earth.
