MAPLE GROVE, May 25.—EDITOR FARMERS' LEADER: Dear Sir—Please to allow mft space in your paper to reply to the articles published in the News relat ing to the FARMERS' LEADER PUBLISHING COMPANY and myself, and first let me say that the editor of the News can crawl through a very small hole in the way of evading a test as to whether he has in many ways falsely represented the actions of the board of directors of the LEADER Publishing Company or not. Fir3t, he proposes to pay me for the time used in pointing out the many ways he has falsely represented the actions of the board, and when hfs offers is accepted and only three dollars is asked, Brother Nash crawls out by saying (we will de posit the amount, $3, with any responsi ble man he may name, then Mr. Brad shaw may choose a third, the only re strictions we place on the selection, being that none of the stockholders of. the LEADER Company, when Mr. Bradshaw convinces this committee that our state ments were false in many particulars, the holder of the money is hereby author ized to pay it over to him. Now, Brother Nash, are there any further details or pre liminary arrangements over the condi tions by which I may earn ALL of $3 and again give you an opportunity to make false statements regarding this company? It is very evident that either you or I are lying, and as you pride your self on the correctness of your statements I will make you the following offer. I will deposit in any one of the three banks of Canton 8100, you to deposit a like amount, subject to the following condi tions, that if I cannot prove to the satis faction of a majority of a committee of three, selected as you have before stated, that the articles, any one or all as pub lished in the Sioux Valley News relating to the FARMERS' LEADER Publishing Company and the board of directors are in many particulars false then the $200 is to be paid over to you, but should I prove to the satisfaction of a majority of the committee, that any one or all of said articles arc false in many particulars then the money is to be paid over to me. It is to be hoped that the history of the past is more truthful than the his tory that the News gives us of the pre sent, the editor of which prides himself on the correctness of his statements. A short time since the News stated that of the board of directors, onlj' Messrs. Isack son and Holter had made any effort to carry out the contract with Pierre in good faith, but after his memory had been jogged he found one other, and then an other, whose name fof obvious reasons had been left forgotten, and it is probable that if he had not tired me out on that A good housewife is always on the look-out for a healthy beverage for her children. IT IS NO BLUFF, Hon. Henry Bradshaw Makes N. C. Nash subject he would finally have found all the board to have carried out their con tract in good faith. Yet the News prides itself on the correctness of its statements. Again, the News of M$y 15, contains the following premeditated and dastardly false report which the editor no doubt prides himself on for the correctness ot its statements: "Shortly after the paper was started, a meeting of the directors was called, and at this meeting Messrs. Bradshaw, Lea vitt, and Gehon attempted to commit the paper to the independent party, and when a vote was finally taken, only those three voted for it while Messrs Isackson, Hok enstad, Sundvoid, and Larson voted against the scheme. Mr. Gehon, who was vice-president of the company, refus ed to declare the motion lost as he should have done and as any honest man would have done, but demanded a division. Then Bradshaw made one of his wild harangues and finally Larson was won over and these four Arectors, in violation of the by-laws of thep organization usurp ed the authority of the stockholders and committed the paper to the independent party, thus compelling republican stock holders to pay the independent fiddler and dance to independent music." This portion of the News editor's article is precisely like most all of his articles when a certain purpose is in view, and it is such articles that gives cause for a paper belonging to the farmers wherein, they may have an' opportunity to advance ideas and defend themselves against untruthful accusations, unjust and un fair insinuations. First Leavitt, was not present at this meeting of the board. Was not nor never has been a member of the board and con sequently could not vote and there is no doubt N. C. knew it when he wrote that article and substituted the name of Lea vitt in place of Ole Byre because it would sound better to have Leavitt, Gehon and Bradshaw, all candidates on the indepen dent ticket as, the prime movers in mak ing THE LEADER an independent jmper— independent tjhj^ciie sense of the word. And then you know^oTcickVat" Ole' Byre it could possibly work N. C. some injury among the Norweigans, but to have Lea vitt in, that would serve the purpose in fine shape,. But to proceed, and these four directors in violation, of the by-laws of the organization usurped the au thority of the stockholders and etc. Let me say that this statement is false regard less of the News priding itself on the cor rectness of its statements. The board of directors did not usurp the authority of the stockholders and it's proven by the fact that at a meeting of the stockholders held at a later date no change was made or attempted to be made in the stand of the paper, and further, prior to the ac tion of the board in this matter the opin ion of many of the stockholders was ask ed and to size it all up in a few words, there arc a few strong republican- stock holders in this company that expected to get the strengtli of the farmers, alliance through taking stock in a farmers, paper and when through its becoming an inde (Continued on page 4.)
