Clean, Moral and Refined o«50Ur 95 Old Settlers Address by J. M. Wahl Ladies ami Gentlemen As tlie rain has interfered with our roe ram, I will have to pick out a few sentences of what I had intended, and in my mind to say upon this occasion, and only take up a lew minutes of our valuable time. This is a simi-Centenial year for Lincoln County, as it was 50 years on June 1st that the tirst piece of land became private property. This land consisted of fractions along tlie River and being a part of the Big Timber, extending from tPairview to the New ton Iliil and this timber had the re putation of being the largest Tract of Timber on the Big Sioux Iliver. Most any one looking for laud, would have left the H'lesh pots of Egypt as It were if he could have possessed part of this valuable timber, and what a blessing for the first settlers of this county, that part of it was on the School Section, the early settlers wiil remember with thanks. There was no Philosopher that even predicted, that we should live to use the handy and ready fuel found on every farm today, better and much cleaner, than the blessed bull'alo chips. The Cowboy French or Latin name, given the dry Cow Dung, that many mothers in this territory, picked "up on the Praire, and earring it in sacks on their backs to the sod shack, to keep the children warm. I shall hardly mention the many trials of the first settlers. We behold a transformation of this wilderness into beautiful cities, and farm homes equal, if not superior to any part of the United States. Not long ago I met a lady who told me that at one time the tirst years in the 70's, residing on the prairie, the family for two weeks, subsisted .on a little ground corn, her father brought from Vermillion, mixing it with pota toes for the meals. Now this lady lives in a comfortable home and goes shopping In a $2000 automobile. It is a saying that every dog has his day, and surely the farmer's dog has his now, and when the farmers does well, everybody does well, even the banker. It does you good, old set tler, it does me good to behold" this change. Think of the toils of your parents or grand parents, you young people, within the hearing of my voice, you enjoying home stately built, plenty of food and comforts, that so many in some parts uf the world are lacking to day. For you roads, bridges, school and churches built, Institutions of higher learning, all been worked and done for while the pioneers were poor and please do not forget that highest and most useful Institution in Ameri can History, the frontier life, its ex periences from the time of W m. Penn, Daniel Boone, down to Lewis and Clark expedition through our own territory. The Path tinder Fremont, finding the way overland to the Paci fic and please also, do not forget wiiat we gained, when through the fickle mindedtiess of a woman (ZenI. Sam Huston, left the Governor's chair of Tennesee and joined Dr. Smith, the Allans, and three others, all educat ed college men, who gave us Texas, with Bio Grande as a south-west boundary, and Huston's character can best be tola by his resigning the Gov ernorship of Texas in 1861, rather mmm THE PAPlfiR WITH THUS LAUGEST PA1D-1N-ADVANOH CIRCULATION 4 LEADER in tho Cause of Economy and Reform, the Defender of Truth and Juattoe, the Foe of Fraud and Corruption CANTON, SOUTH DAKOTA. Here Dr. Smith then »:$ years old, the two Allans and others of fame, met at a State Assemblage a scene I never siiall forget) California and I might say Oregon, came to us iirouRli the eilorts and skill, acquired in the Frontier School. We gained Empires for our Union and now you old settlers of Lincoln county who are surrounded by your children and family and spending your declin ing years in comfort and plenty, I know you are thankful to Almighty God. I am sorry in a certain way, that so many of us, are uearir.g the three score and ten allotted to men, and so many has been called away more so this last year, than any before in the History of our county. (Of thyse settling near Trapper shanty as this place was called in 1807 only Mrs Jasper Keith and perhaps another lady resides in the County to day) Some years ago I made some sug gestions as to what should be done with preserving the first log house built in 1868 (one that was well intact) and also the saving of the first school and township records, which would be valuable, both historical and other wise, (that now is unprotected, and a burden to school and Township offi cials) In 18"( Judge Gilford was appointed at the 4th of July Centenial Celebra tion to write a history of this county. He is known to have done some work to that end, but we have been unable to find any copy or manuscript of his doing. The County then was 10 years old. Now we are nearing the 50 year mark, of our County's Organization and efforts should be made, to get the History we have been trying to write completed. A matter that will be taken up at our business meeting to day, which I hope many will attend. As for myself, unforseen circumstanc es, and conditions over which we had no control has delayed the work on my part. The year has been one of the tfiost eventful, in the 'World's History. Tho^e Nations of Europe, who for over 100 years have spent millions in money, and the life of thousands of missionaries to civilize and christian ize the heathens and bring God's mes sage of peace and good will to men, has so far forgotten themselves, as to become murderers, most cruel, out doing the North American Indian, or the tribes of the South Sea Island, and these latter less responsible be cause they did not know any better. In the 30 years war about 300,000 were killed per year, while now about two millions are killed in battle in ten months. You say we are advanc ing in civilization and modes of living —yes, but we have advanced at a fearful rate of killing and dying it seems some say, as war is spoken of in the Bible and has sanction from on high. Well such sancLfon was not given to war for dollars wealth and it you want to follow that theory, let Kaiser Wilhelm, King Gebrge and old Joseph of Austria, like Dfcvid of old, pick up the war material out of the Brook and fight. But Kqips and July 10th plosives should noi be used to kill in nocent women and children. The Babylonians, Phlnesians and the Carthagenians the three most powerful nations, before the Greek, 500 years before Christ, planted Colon ies in order to advance their trade, but were diplomatic enough to divid the territory and avoid any friction. You say we are reaping borne benefits of this war, yes In dollars, but that hardly clear our concience, though the United States Government are doing all they can for peace and we today as a mighty Nation occupy an exhalted possession, and never has an American citizenship been so valuable as at present. Many of us points to the other side as the land of our fore fathers, we do not forget that this is our country.
