All along during the late campaign
the friends of Milbank and the Cor
ruptionists, claimed that our charges
against the Commissioners were sim
ply campaign powder, to be touched
off for political effect, and that as
soon as the county.seat matter was
settled there would be nothing more
said about the matter. The county
seat question was settled on the 8th
day of November, and since that time,
proceedings have been instituted
against the Commissioners, they have
been cited to appear before the Judge
to answer for their crimes, and have
been suspended from further duties
until a hearing can be had. Does
this smell like campaign powder?
The people of Big Stone City, backed
by the tax-payers of the county, are
in earnest in this matter, and they
are determined to push the prosecu
tion of these public robbers to the full
extent of the law. To do this it will
lake energy, patience and money, as
the Milbank ring are at the back of
the corruptionists and will aid them
in every possible way to escape the
justice which should overtake them.
Every honest man in the county
knows that there has been a most
wanton waste of public funds, during
the past year. .Since January 1st
over 520,000 of orders have been is
sued and a few cheap bridges have
b'H-n the only return that the county
has received for this enormous a
mount. Where the money has gone
is the question. Had these funds
lK*en judiciously expended for the
public good it would have been a
grevious burden to heap upon a new
ly settled county, but if the people
had got something like value receiv
e 1 for the mortgage against their
property, they would have tried to
bear it patiently and like men, but
when they reflect that this burden
has been heaped upon them, simply
ro enrich a few favorites, without
eonferring upon the public anything
like a corresponding remuneration,
it is asking a little too much. Ilad
these commissioners been allowed to
proceed they would have eventually
-•.unk the county under a debt from
which it could never free itself, witli
0 it repudiating. The brakes have
'en put on and the criminals are at
the bar of justice. At the bar of
public opinion of Grant county, they
have already been condemned, and
stood convicted of wanton extrava
gance and malfeasance in office. Hut
the reig i of extravagance we believe
is at an end, and for this result the tax
payers of Grant county owe a debt of
•latitude to Messrs. Geo. W. Hawes,
an.! 1). W. Fountain, attorneys of
1 his place, for their untiring efforts
in getting these commissioners sus
pended from the office, which they

and dishonored. Their
seri-es have been gratuitously ren

tended them shows the justness of
their cause and the zeal with which
it was prosecuted.
